Go see it.
Seriously, that's my review. Go see it!
Given the kind of week I've had, this is the movie I really needed to break out of my funk. This is some of the most fun I've had watching a Spielberg movie in a long time. It honestly felt a little like a sci-fi Indiana Jones adventure. The cameo's are a lot of fun (though most are 'blink and you missed it') and fit the world of the film. It's never boring and just.... Just go see it! You'll see what I mean.

FA+

In other words, if it existed today, the whole family could log in, looking just like the characters we created and interact however we want.
So, is it like The World from .//hack? or SAO from Sword Art Online? Looked similar to Nerv Gear. Though more realistic. (I remember back on G4 they had a gameshow where they had to put on VR helmets and compete in military combat with a similar set-up of walking around in the game)
Anyway, would you say it's worth seeing it before seeing Pacific Rim Uprising? Since I was made to see that shitty Tomb Raider movie (though it gave us plenty to talk about in MY journal, so it wasn't a complete waste of time. ^_^)
And would you say RPO is similar to Wreck-It Ralph with as many cameos and Easter Eggs to see related to gaming (and sci-fi)?
BTW, glad that you didn't give too much away. I already feel like I might know too much from all the trailers and commercials and such...
Honestly, with the exception of a few game character, almost all are 'Blink and you missed it'. The ones seen the most are Tracer from Overwatch, Raynor from Starcraft, Goro from Mortal Kombat, and several Street Fighter character (Ryu and Chun Li are the most prominant, but I did catch Blanka in the background and E. Honda in the epic final battle.) Most of the pop culture references most prominent in the movie are from movies (one of the biggest almost had rolling on the floor I was laughing so hard). Others that I noticed in the background were The Battletoads, Halo solider (if you've seen the previews, you've seen their appearance) Lara Croft is there, but you only see her from the back at a dance club. I think I saw Sonic, but it was a split second of him doing his spin attack so I'm not sure. Interestingly I didn't see any Nintendo or Sony characters in the movie, and only the Halo Soldiers from Microsoft, all other game characters were from 3rd party developers. Nintendo probably gets the most callouts though, characters make reference to them and posters of their games can be seen hanging up on the walls, the woman shouting "Just practicing my Mario Kart, What the Hell you think I'm doing!?", and, while I'm not 100% positive, there's a scene of a girl jumping on the heads of enemies that looks just like stomping on goomba's to me.
I will say its epic to hear the Back to the Future theme play during the final battle, even if it was brief.
By the way, made sure to avoid any spoilers, these just give you some ideas of what to expect. You really have to watch the background in many scenes to catch many of the characters. And I'm NOT going to spoil what happens during the final battle.
If I do get to see it again before it's gone I'll BOLO for him.
I don't know why, but, as fake as it is in real life, there's something I love about the heroes charging headfirst into battle against villains. I guess its something about the ultimate good willing to give it all to defeat the ultimate evil. Some of my favorites:

Yeah some of them are very Hollywood romanticized depictions and 'Murica!' flag waving, but I don't care!
Also, check out this guys face when he sees the forces appear on the horizon from the same movie as those last few. One of the best "OH SHIT!" ever in a movie!
https://youtu.be/OFzdleJarI0?t=45
took a while, also, no wonder it took so long to get a reply!
So, just a brief thing, Bane just utterly ruined that movie for me, but looking at just that scene I quipped "hey Batman, wanna speak louder, I couldn't hear you over the thousand guys fighting around us" (or something like that.)
Indiana Jones was audio only, which was rather weird...
So, Watching all those similar scenes of guys charging in was pretty laughable, though I'm sure that's not what you intended.
The B&W movie tho was rather impressive, especially the cinematography. (the canned sound effects that some foley artist made were the only thing detracting from it imho)
As for RPO, why hasn't there been a tie-in video game by now? I'd totally want to play that! ^_^
Also, about that B&W movie, I heard them mention "Dunkirk", is that recent movie a remake of this one?
I've never seen either before.
Well, the scene has the score set the mood for the scene, so its most prominent at that part. You do hear sound effects during the action sequence, people yelling, gunfire, crashing, etc. but this was when they didn't let the sound effects drown out the music. Its honestly too good to cover up in that entire sequence.
The scenes from the black and white movie are all from the same movie. The Longest Day. Came out around 1960 and covers a lot of the events leading up to the Normandy invasion, during and after. Roughly 4 years after the events in the recent Dunkirk movie. If the Normandy invasion was one of the greatest victories of WWII, Dunkirk was one of the lowest. British and French forces were at their breaking point, stuck in Dunkirk as the Nazis were closing in. If Hitler had order a full bombardment, he very well may have taken all of Europe. England was only around 39 nautical miles away from Dunkirk and they couldn't get their soldiers out. They estimated that maybe 30,000 of around 400,000 soldiers could be evacuated. That's when they enacted Operation Dynamo. Using what ships and resources they had left, the British hurried to evacuate as many as possible. But then they also called in a flotilla of hundreds of merchant marine boats, fishing boats, pleasure craft, yachts, and lifeboats called into service from Britain. Everyday civilians risked their lives to help evacuate the soldiers. In the end, they felt they would be lucky to rescue around 30,000. They rescued over 338,000. Winston Churchill delivered his "we shall fight on the beaches" speech at the end of the operation and hailed their rescue as a "miracle of deliverance". The moment in the movie Dunkirk when the merchant vessels arrive to assist in the evacuation is one of the most uplifting moments in any movie I've seen. From complete and udder hopelessness to an incredible wave of hope.
By the way, that was Sean Connery delivering the Dunkirk line.
Also, the real life person portrayed in the film that declares "We're starting the war from right here!" is Theodore Roosevelt Jr., son of the former president. Incredibly they did land over a mile off course, but that may have been for the better. Of the 21,000 troops that landed at Utah beach, only 197 were killed. Compared to the losses at Omaha Beach were anywhere from 2000-4700 were killed.
I highly recommend both movies. Longest Day was actually filmed using American, British, French and German movie makers to capture the feeling of each side as well as possible.
Bane was just what killed it for me throughout Rises... and that was the majority of the movie.
Oh wow, I had no idea about any of that historical stuff. Was one of those battles the one Saving Private Ryan was doing? I've played the parody of that scene in Conker's Bad Fur Day...
NO... for Real? Sean Connery!?
So do you know all these facts about the war cuz of the movie or because your a history buff?
I kinda wish he had been allowed to develop Batman Triumphant just to see how he would've handled a much darker Batman involving the Scarecrow and the murder of Robin.
Yeah, the opening scene in Saving Private Ryan is based on the Omaha Beach landing. It was probably the bloodiest battle that day and was the most heavily defended of the beaches. The number of dead Allies per beach was something like 2000 at Omaha Beach where the Americans landed, 1000 at Sword Beach and 1000 Gold Beach where the British landed, 340 at Juno Beach where the Canadians landed and 197 at Utah Beach where the other American battalions landed.
Yep, he's the one who yells at the Nazi and then nearly drowns when he trips getting off the landing craft. By the way, there really was a bagpipe player at Sword Beach playing loud and strong as the battle ranged around him. German soldiers later said they all knew he was there but refused to shoot him because they were convinced he had gone insane and felt bad for him!
Wouldn't say I'm a history buff, but the more I learn about WWII the more interesting I find it. Although, it really is scary to think just how close the Nazis came to winning on several occasions.
I know so very little about this Batman Triumphant...
Wowzers! (and yet Spanish Flu killed yet more people still)
I didn't know that was actually the opening scene... I just know the parody of it in Conker's Bad Fur Day.
lol, they thought he went insane and felt bad for him? Ha!
Well, if anything, he wasn't a threat and he might have distracted his allies, so no point in wasting ammo on him.
Yeah, I recall hearing that if decisions were made better/in a timely manor, then they might have turned the tide of victory in their favor.
Batman Triumphant was going to be the sequel to Batman and Robin had it not been so derided. Like I said it was going to be much darker with Batman taking on the Scarecrow and Harley Quinn. Rumors are Nicholas Cage was first asked to be Scarecrow, but there's also word Jeff Goldblum was considered as well. Also, the original title for the move was Batman Unchained. Interestingly enough, it was seen as being a movie to tie all the existing Batman movies to that point together, with Jack Nicholson, Michelle Pfieffer, Tommy Lee Jones, Danny Devito and Jim Carrey reprising their roles as their respective villains in Batmans mind when he's affected by Scarecrows fear toxin. Interestingly, a lot of these elements were used in the Batman Arkham series of video games.
That parody of it in Conker's Bad Fur Day is spot on. Though the real life event was... a nightmare to put it mildly.
There was apparently a Panzer platoon that could've wiped out the Allies at Normandy had they been called into action, but no one did. Why? The only people who were given authority by Hitler to call them into action were unavailable, leaving only Hitler as the only one who could do so. And he was asleep. Why didn't anyone wake him and ask for authorization to send in the Panzers? No one dared wake him for fear of facing his violent temper.
Speaking of another miracle, early in the night before the invasion British paratroopers landed in France ahead of time to try and confuse the enemy and gain a foothold at key strategic locations. Even tossing out mannequins disguised as troops to throw off the nazis. It was... pretty bad for a lot of them. One paratrooper later recorded being stuck by his parachute in a tree and helplessly watching his comrades get gunned down by the nazis as they tried to land. One of the biggest moments though was getting control of a bridge. But it was only British soldiers on foot against a bunch of tanks. Not really a fair fight. They set up on the other side of the bridge and waited for the tanks to appear, armed with only rifles and a primitive grenade launcher. The man had only one shot to hit the lead tank and damage it enough to instill doubt in the remaining tanks ready to charge forward. The launcher was so primitive that a sharpshooter might, MIGHT be able to hit a bullseye once out of ever 30 shots no matter how accurate he was. This man one shot to make a difference. He nailed it. Not only did the shot hit the tank, it DESTROYED it. The rest of the tanks stayed back, afraid there was an army of tanks on the other side of the bridge. it was psychological warfare until the allies could land and force the nazis back.
By the way, one of my favorite moments in the movie The Longest Day is when the Allies begin their coastal bombardment and a Frenchmen begin cheering and celebrating, waving his flag while bombs are landing all around his house. He's the happiest man in the world at that moment lol!

Seriously, the size and scope of the D-Day invasion is mesmerizing http://www.varsityfs.com/wordpress/.....ng-940x470.jpg
Also, check out this tribute to the fallen on D-Day http://www.amusingplanet.com/2013/0.....-normandy.html
Really? We could have had Harley Quinn in a movie?! DAMN! I want to live in the parallel universe where That movie got made! ^_^
I wonder how Two-Face, Penguin and Joker would come back, didn't they all die in their movies?... OH, in Bruce Wayne's mind... right.
I've beaten Asylum and City, still need to get around to Origins and playing more than just the beginning of Knight.
Oh, I'm sure it was and Conker was pretty good about it's parodies. I wish we could get another game either OF Conker or LIKE Conker these days...
Precisely what I was thinking of (I think). So, pretty much if the Nazis had a more likeable leader, they might have won the war with ease. lol
Mannequins disguised as soldiers? That's brilliant!
Okay, wow, that's pretty crazy! That really happened? Did they ever make a movie based on that event?
That's one hella lucky shot!
That tribute was pretty cool looking. That must have taken quite a lot of dedication to pull off.
It's also how they got Mark Hamill's Joker back in Batman Arkham Knight
I don't think there's a movie based around it, but I remember seeing reenactments of it in documentaries with the original soldiers. This was back when History channel actually had history on it.
Oooh, he Did come back? Even after he said he was done after City?
lol. Yeah, "The History Channel" has become something of a farce lately.
Besides maybe The Weather Channel, is there Any channel left that was dedicated to one particular thing that still keeps to doing just that one thing?
As for Laura, I've heard she's also one of the racers in the first challenge.
Oh, and what was the thing that had you ROTFL?
Yeah, a little girl had an odd Donkey Kong 3 poster on her wall. Can't say I recall a "Goomba Stomping scene"...
I wonder if Ralph 2 will have m/any Nintendo cameos? Bowser was an awesome cameo in the first, hopefully Villain-Annon will be back for the sequel.
BTW, as for spoilers, the trailers didn't ruin it for me in the slightest.
I even watched the Thug Notes video on the book, only a few things like the quarter and Ache's identity would likely have been spoiled. Kinda wondering if I somehow missed seeing that video back when it was originally posted...
The scene where they pull out Chucky and then it switches to the real world and you see all the bad combatants going down. I was laughing my head off.
Hard to say how they'll appear in Ralph 2. Nintendo allowed them to under certain direction, don't know if it will be much the same this time as the first. Then again, after the treatment of some of its IP's you can't blame them for being weary about how their characters are used in movies (the original Mario Bros/Zelda cartoon, Mario World cartoon, the CDI games, the live action movie, and that... Donkey Kong Country abomination. At least it had a cool theme song)
Yeah, that got me real good too. Likewise to the Sixers tackling The Shining.
Well, Nintendo seem to be relaxing and willing to give licensing their properties another try.
And I really liked the Mario, Zelda and Donkey Kong Country cartoons!
The utter failure that is their deal with Phillips is something else entirely.
They've teamed with Capcom to make Zelda games that I thought were really good (Oracle of Ages and Seasons as well as Minish Cap)
Namco helped make StarFox Assault which I thought was fun.
Other times it hasn't turned out so well. Looking mainly at Metroid Other M (developed in conjunction with Team Ninja who did Ninja Gaiden)
And StarFox Zero, developed by Platinum Studios (which you'd THINK would've been great, given they're the ones who developed the Bayonetta games, Madworld,
Vanquish, Metal Gear Rising Revengence and Neir: Automata but... didn't work out so great here) Then again, Platinum's had some bombs themselves, like the
Ninja Turtles and Legend of Korra games, so not everything they touch is... PLATINUM? *puts on sunglasses*
I have to admit I was disappointed to hear Retro Studios wouldn't be working on the new Metroid Prime 4 after they did a fantastic job on the first 3. But hearing that Nintendo hired the studio that was developing Star Wars 1313, before disney ruined that, to help make Prime 4 has me super excited!
I still haven't played a Star Fox besides 64, even though I own the two WiiU SF games.
I thought OtherM wasn't so bad, but I got stuck in the game and never picked it back up again... so yeah, could have been a lot better, for sure. LOVED Samus Returns tho. ^_^
Never played Vanquish or Neir: Automata, (or the TMNT and LoK games) but I wasn't able to get far in MGR:Revengance, IDK if I just couldn't get the hang of the controls or what...
Well, I've only played the original Prime and did NOT like the game, I'm just too used to being able to see myself when I'm platforming around and killing badguys.
Yeah, I'd heard about 1313 and how it was canned because of the merger with Disney, that sucks.
Yeah, I knew about the original plan of them being each related to the three Goddesses of Hyrule, though I wonder why they haven't made some sort of game to focus on Farore...
And yes, I knew that as well, I believe I knew that even before The Completionist did his video on the duo. (with the help of PBG)
I think it is far and away one of the absolute best episodes he's created.
Touching on everything from good criticism of the game, to the experience,
even providing a new theory on the ending that I actually had never heard
before and makes really good sense and adds a much deeper meaning to the
story. Seriously, check it out right away if you haven't!
Was teased that it was coming earlier and was so excited when I saw it was finally posted.
I found it quite funny that he went back to the stuff he said about it in the Nintendo Power episode.
Thought it was cool how he addressed some of the highlights of the game (he did leave a few things out that he could have touched upon)
Definitely want to rewatch it sometime soon.
A shame he didn't mention that "Ness" occasionally gets Homesickness if he doesn't see or talk with his mom.
One of the things I felt he left out during the discussion of the ending of the game was how in the end it's YOU that is the ultimate source of attack prayer against Gygas. I recall that really hitting me with the feels as a kid.
Also, did you find it odd that he talked about not having the game physically when he somehow had the Player's Guide that the game came with? (I'd have figured he's have had a scene where he asked for Pat the NES Punk if he could borrow his copy of EarthBound. Was SO weird that the Nerd was talking about something as modern as the SNES Classic Edition, which I'm still hoping to get someday...)
I kinda wonder if the SNES Classic has a digital version of the guide available... or otherwise if it's free somewhere, since it's like a travel guide to Eagleland.
Had to view this on a PC to see more than just Star Fox 2 being shown.
This is fantastic! The whole book is here!
