"Rampage" review

Honestly, probably exactly what you think it is if you've seen the trailers. And honestly, for me this wasn't a bad thing. This is a fun, check your brain at the door, monster brawl in the spirit of something like King Kong or Godzilla, though not as good as those. (from my understanding, its become the highest rated movie based on video game, so that's saying something at least) Surprisingly gory in parts for its pg13 rating (think Kong:Skull Island level of gore) it does feel they probably cut a few things out to secure that rating. The actors are all clearly having a blast with their roles and the monsters look pretty good. There is one sequence where it felt like the special effects budget ran out. If you;ve seen the trailer you've seen the part where the wolf leaps into the air and attacks a helicopter, which looks quite good in the film, but right after when the helicopter crashes into the side of a mountain then crashes and explodes.... It seriously looked like someone superimposed fire around it. That aside, everything else looked quite good. The film also had no qualms about putting everyone in the monsters path in peril. These monsters are out to attack everything in their path, so get out of the way or get smashed or eaten. Really only disappointment I can think from it is one of the monsters goes down quite anticlimactically, but that's a very small gripe given the rest of the film.
I couldn't help but think back to some of the old monster movies they would lampoon on Mystery Science Theater 3000. This felt exactly like those movies of old, just with much better looking special effects and a much bigger budget. Go and have a blast watching Chicago get leveled!

FA+

How'd you see it so soon?
Basically gleaned that you liked it, will go see it a week from tomorrow.
Not sure yet what I'll see tomorrow tho...
Did you see Ready Player One yet?
Oh yeah, I liked it just fine, had a fun time watching it.
Yeah, did my previous journal on it.
Weird, the whole marketing of it coming out for 4/20 was so prevalent...
Guess Rampage might be what I'll see tomorrow.
Right, sorry. Duh. Been distracted by a bunch of things and haven't had many furs to talk to... ( plus I was reading all the TV Tropes entries on the movie today.)
There's actually one trope I thought the movie subverted, but I won't give it away until after you see it.
Speaking of Super Troopers, I just watched Cinefix's 9 Things You Never Knew About Super Troopers... Probably.

You gonna see that one too? IDK if I'll be seeing it myself...
Sadly, I took yet another unwanted break from the movies... (as I mentioned in my journal earlier)
I figured as much, since you hadn't left me a comment on it, so that was me dropping a hint that I'd made a journal. heh ^_^
REALLY Highest rated video game movie?? Woah.
And I don't doubt that Tomb Raider 2018 will be surpassed.
I think Ready Player One, Wreck-It Ralph and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle are like the top three (in no particular order)
Also, I saw a YT video that talked about how Silent Hill the movie was the best video game movie and why. It was quite an interesting watch, I'll see if I can find it and show it to you. ^_^
*edi*
Found it quick! ^_^

I haven't seen the video yet, but I can guess why they present it as such. As far as the look, flow, and story telling, its probably one of the closest video game movies that represents its source material. Though to be honest, I still didn't think it was that great of a movie. I still feel if they had stuck closer to the story that was in the game instead of all the strange changes and padding it would've made for a much better, tighter movie as well as better balance. Still, glad they used mainly practical effects instead of cg.
Indeed, I feel the same way. Makes you wish that there was a way to recut the film to make it even better.
Did you have any issue with Harry Mason's role being given to a woman?
I didn't have any issue with Sean Bean at the time, but in hindsight his part could have been cut.
Also, I honestly didn't know that the movie was largely practical effects when I saw it. Pretty cool~ ^_^

Yeah, they did a truly fantastic job on that aspect of the film. It's really too bad the rest of the film wasn't the same level of quality.
And the YT video explained that Bean's character was executive medling, that's why.
Sounds like the best horror game to movie adaptation would have to be something like VR and have mild interactivity. heh.
As for the Shining, the photograph at the end is just a mystery, like what does it mean?
I've heard theories but none that seemed definitive.
(btw how awesome was it to see that photograph recreated in THAT movie, huh? ^_^)
That whole segment was rather awesome and well done. I was wondering how far they were going to go with it, and I must admit it went further than I thought they would. Spielberg and Kubrick were friends in real life, so it feels appropriate that he gave him such a big reference in that movie. The part where I0I sends in their units to find the key and they watch as they all die scream in horror at their stations from their experience in the game had me rolling on the floor. By the way, did you recognize the villain as the same actor as the villain in Rogue One?
Yes, indeed it was most certainly awesome.
I found out about their friendship from TV Tropes.
I wasn't quite ROTFLOLing, but I did find absolutely hilarious!
And no. I didn't even realize that a certain actor was in both Last Jedi and Uprising...
(and I think the girl who plays Rey was in something else I saw too and didn't recognize that it was her either...)
I was amazed at how much all the animals looked so real! (especially the ones in the zoo at the start)
I kinda wished the monster in the opening got more screen time.
Also, what's the deal with the names of Ralph (who's name was only dropped once at the beginning) and Lizzy going unused? That and the people eating was on the low side... otherwise I felt like the movie captured the game perfectly.
BTW, happen to notice that the villains had a Rampage arcade game in their office?
(Also, what happened to the pet rat? That seemed to be a plot device that went unused...)
Yeah, I think they wanted it to be an easter egg kinda thing, but it was pretty blatant. Yeah, wonder if the rat was being fed something that would affect it, but its never really explored. My guess is if they do a sequel they have that plot hole they can use to fill in.
Also, people in the theater I was in lost it when George did his last... "Sign Language" gesture
You say blatant, I say "Blink and you'll miss it". It's only clearly visible in one shot, as they're panning by it.
Possibly it was involved in a deleted scene or scrapped plot-line?
I felt they wrapped everything up rather well, no Albert Wesker out there to cause trouble next time, so I don't see how they'd be able to do a sequel. (besides, could they really do any better with a sequel than they did with this one?)
The bird or the *points to an ok hand gesture* one? I'm guessing the latter.!
That one had me busting a gut too. Wish I could have had your kind of experience, like I said, the theater was pretty empty, though we Did see the first showing of the day...
Really? Pretty sure I saw it in the background in two or three scenes, felt hard to miss to me.
Yeah, the second hand gesture
