Character designs:Commercially
This is a topic of contention: If somebody or a company approached you and asked if they could model something after your character directly, for example, your character has unique bits and a toy was proposed to be designed off of it: would you take the opportunity if you will be given royalties?
Think of it in the character owner's shoes and then the people they know or their following. Would all hell break loose, or do you think friends / followers of the character owner would be supportive?

FA+

Among friends, is another thing. They may or may not support it, based how they feel about it. But should ultimately be up to the owner
Hopefully even despite that, friends will still be friends
As for what my followers would think...Honestly no clue o3o so many and so varied i have no idea XP not sure much would happen though. The ones that would want it would clammier for it and the ones that wouldn't i don't think would mind, my characters my decision >3> but if they did well, idk XP there's so many different people with different opinions. I just know what id want, and how id do it, i figured id deal with the aftermath as it came XP
As for the followers, yeah, everyone has their own thoughts about specific matters. Could be jealousy, or could be happy that the hard work put into the character was noticed and then the opportunity presented.
The aftermath would be the main concern for me.
As for that ive..never honestly cared ^^; i love it when people like my stuff and that's why i post it, but if you dont like it, well that's just unfortunate. But their not your characters, and their not your ideas, their mine and my ideas, and i like them. You can try and dissuade me from doing it but if i want to im going to >3> and you can just F$!@$ off if your going to try and argue with me without any reasoning other than 'i dont want you to.' Not your decision to make, its mine, so if i want to, i will o3o (sorry to say 'you' all over the place in there i don't mean you as in you i mean you as in whomever would be questioning it ^^;)
In the end we all here to have fun, and i think if someone wanted to make a lovely toy out of a character of mine that would be great and fun :3 If your worried about community back lash though...well then feel free to be o3o; i cant say much else to make you not be XP a community you want to appease is a powerful thing, i personally just make sure that the people close to me like what i do, if others do that's great :3 but if not, dont let the door hit yea on the way out X3
And my next question is what would make your character more deserving of this sort of thing compared to someone else who also spent the same amount of time designing their character?
Id never think my character would be more deserving though o3o that's purelly subjective. I would never think my work is better than another's or more deserving of something, i just hope people like it >3>
If you commissioned someone to make the item and then gave them permission to sell it after the fact, that would be a different context to just someone saying I like your character and want to make a product from that specific design.
And if think that your character is not more special than any others, why would agree to let yours be commercialized when there are plenty of others would like the same thing.
Personally I disagree with this because I actively avoid trying to make it seem like my character is somehow better than someone else's regardless if I spent a few hours to days designing it and 1000's of dollars of art of that character, because I don't think I would be deserving of such an opportunity because all that I have done, I did for myself, I did not nothing to earn that opportunity other than what I did for myself.
So I would instead help the person design a new character using mine a model/base/starting point but then allowing them to create something unique and purpose built.
Its all up the creator in the end and the individuals interpretation after the fact anyway. :3
While the creator has the ultimate choice, it still stands in this weird area because I don't think a particular character belonging to anyone should receive such special attention. Like Artica gettings attention from creators just for being Artica and having the resources to buy literally boat loads of art. Or any other more recognizable character for that matter.
It is kind of like the Kardashians getting a lot of attention just for being the Kardashians unlike Bill Gates or Steve Jobs who built their empires from almost nothing and then used their influence to leave large meaningful impacts on society as a whole.
I am actually very weirded out by random things like this, because I didn't really do much to warrant such attention other than a likable design. And usually if I am gifted something I try to give something in return. [trust me this is even worse IRL if you have a friend that gets your something for a holiday and you didn't get anyone anything, not because you don;t care but because you do't expect it]
Also I want my designs to be noticed, but not to the point of being swarmed by people, because the friendships I have made feel more meaningful that way.
You should be guaranteed a large cut of it anyway because you have artist's copyright or however it goes. It's your idea and you've published it in the shape of your idea. Heck, you probably could've started selling toys before they came to you and made your own business that way.
But it largely depends on what you two agree on, on how much each idea, the idea of the shape and the idea of the molding, is a part of the decision on how much cut you get. But you should be guaranteed it anyway or any kind of compensation.
As for whether followers would like it, it depends on how you want to represent yourself to the people. Many may enjoy having the toy. Many may be against it because of principles. But honestly, the only obligation you have is to yourself and any obligation you feel your followers should have. They follow you for a reason, after all.
PS, love your character.
I do agree, it ultimately is up to the character owner in the end.
When it comes to representation to the people, I like to think the majority would be glad of the offer and of course, it'll depend on the quality of the collaboration as well. If it's a high quality product at a great price versus the competition (kind of like AMD vs intel nowdays), more positive support ought to come of it.
I'm glad you dig her! If others continue appreciating her as I do, more art will flow.
I can't tell you if they got royalties for sales, but for a while they were mods in the forums. Don't think it lead to anything more then a little boost in popularity for the character author.
But in a position like that, he'll yeah I'd take the opportunity. BUT only after laying down a rule and reaching the agreement that I still own the copyright to my character.
Thanks for your comment, and yeah, it's something that doesn't happen very often so I'd take it too.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
Plus they keep making their movies or w/e. This is a question of: Will people be happy if you get passive income for hard work put into a char design, or will they spurn you?
Also, 100% agree with praise as fur / gamer.
