Extended Thoughts on: Kenneth Simmons/Kasumi Seiyoku-danuki

General
This was a really fun character to write. I know pretty much nothing about anime or Japanese culture. At all. Like, the first anime I’ve ever watched was Madoka Magica. I have since learned that that might not have been the best anime to start off with.
In any case, a weeb turning into a slutty Yokai (see? I did learn something!) required lots of Japanese research. I’m still not sure if I’ve got everything right, but I think I did a decent job! It doesn’t hurt that I really like writing the tanuki’s changes, and it REALLY doesn’t hurt that I was given such great references. I’m happy with how it turned out!
A problem I had at the beginning was if Kasumi would be too ‘OP’, since she has access to magic and stuff. That’s one of the main reasons why she’s such a terrible drunk; if she actually focused, she might be able to do some powerful things, but she’s just content to drink and fuck, with the occasional spell.
A weird concern I had with writing it is if I was being too mean with how gross and weebish Kenneth is, but porn is full of stereotypes, especially my type. Nonetheless, I hope I didn’t offend anyone. If I did, then… sorry?
Trivia:
- First off, name time. ‘Kuri’ means Chestnut, and the ‘-mi’ at the end is common for a certain character archetype (I’ll get to that later). ‘Mujina’ is a Japanese badger, one that is sometimes called a tanuki. As for her name at the end, ‘Kasumi’ has several meanings, but I kinda just like the name. And ‘Seiyoku-danuki’ means ‘lust tanuki’… I think. I hope! Kenneth Simmons has no cool name origins; I just used a two disyllabic names to represent an everyman. It matters… maybe.
- Perhaps nobody’s noticed this, and I’m certain nobody cares, but I’ll mention it anyway. The game’s text gradually changes from blue to pink depending on the gender of the character. Since Kenneth completely TGs in the middle, I had to rework it so his font turns pink in the middle, and stays that way until the end. It was nasty to implement, and I’m not sure if it was worth it, but whatevs.
- Tanuki are usually depicted with leaves on their heads, as those leaves grant them power. Kasumi wears hers as a hairpin.
- I showed that cringy prologue to several people, and everyone’s response was the same: ‘I want to die’. Mission accomplished!
- There’s actually a tanuki that turned himself into a sake bottle. Apparently he and Kasumi are related.
- Kirito is apparently a character from Sword Art Online. I have only heard bad things about this show.
- Possibly broken Japanese language time! “Itadakumasu” is what you say before a meal, “nihonshu” is sake, “sakazuki” is a sake drinking cup, “Chottō” is an expression of disgust, “Byouso, Mujima-sama” is “focus, Mujima” and the “-sama” is used for someone of authority, though she uses it sarcastically, “Kanpai!” is like “Cheers!”, a “karakasa” is a monster umbrella (seriously), and “gyaru” is kinda like a bimbo, but more of a fashion thing. Did I get any of that right?
- It turns out that Kurimi Mujima is actually a trope! She's called a 'Yamato Nadeshiko', and it basically means a demure, 'proper' Japanese woman.
- One of my favourite lines about weebs is actually from an old Filthy Frank episode:
“I’ve been really thinking about going to Japan soon! I lear-I know how to use chopsticks, I know hiragana. Cuz you know I don’t feel like anybody here is on my anime expertise level. First I’ll have to get a job… that’s… th-that’s the first thing…”
Brilliant. I just HAD to touch on some of that in the character.
- I listened to a lot of overenthusiastic Kawaii Future Bass to get me through long periods of writing. Don’t judge me.
- I literally just looked up girly animes, and came up with Ao Haru Ride. Whatever that is. And I namedrop Utena, though I haven’t seen that either. I HAVE seen Your Name, though! It was pretty dang good.
My question: What’s your favourite anime? Mine’s Madoka, not that I have much else to choose from.
