it's a shame when artists simply seek to copy styles instead of trying to learn from them and create their very own. It's a shame you're having to deal with this and I hope those people eventually learn.

I think that's not what Ru is worried about and that he is happy that people likes his style to the point of imitating it.
What forced Ru to write this journal is having people misunderstand who drew these pics and come to complain in PMs thinking he drew something "taboo" (as Ru puts it), so this is a simple journal to clarify this misunderstanding

A lot of artists start out by "mimicking" a style of one or several artists that inspire them. But in that process they discover their own style and slowly grow into it. There's nothing wrong with that so long as they aren't straight up ripping off/copying another artist.

Every artist ever has sought to imitate the artists they respect and enjoy. Even classical painters like Micheal Angelo had peers and mentors who's work and styles they emulate. Its how we as artists grow till we find enough bits of style that work for us individually. The thing about ru's style is that its relatively easy to copy with practice, and it is a style that an artist can be very happy with once they have figured it out, which leads to less branching out because they are already happy with how their work looks. Most artists realise that a 'style' isn't something you own, its something they collected over time, and that immitation just means that their work inspires others to draw. That its good enough to try to be like them. After all, the phrase 'imitation is the most sincere form of flattery' exists for a reason, and is most often applied to artwork.

I will just be honest with you, you shouldn't have to explain yourself not only once, but twice. If YOU know that it wasn't you drawing that "taboo" art piece then thats all that really matters and who really cares about what other people think. That follower/watcher or whoever they are what they think of you is irrelevant because you don't need outside opinions of other to validate your character as an artist.

Honestly, respect would be lost for them for jumping to conclusions and assuming it was you before they had all of the facts. If they truly "respected" you they would have just brought it to your attention and asked you in a non accusatory tone.


Also, im sure they are not imitating your art style because there are many artists with simlar art styles, it could just be a coincidence. Plus they could have been drawing way before you, so they may think you are imitating them. I only have bit a pieces of information on the situation so who really knows, but also who cares.


All of your true watchers and followers wont just jump to conclusions and unwatch you without knowing all of the facts. So, you shouldnt worry about your reputation in that fandom. If its still bother you I say create a new watermark to place on your art pieces so people know for sure if its you or not.

My thoughts exactly. I was going to say pretty much the same thing.

I often find you end up with Cliques (groups) of artists who all eventually end up drawing very similar styles, interestingly enough, i have noticed regional similarities it's kinda like Art Dialect XD also people who draw together a lot pick up things from one another so it's not uncommon.

Sometimes it's just a thing that happens, uninentionally. I often have to check the name because i watch a LOT of artists that ahve evolved into VERY VERY similar styles recently XD

I've noticed both Regional similarities as well as site similarities. Some art styles you can just say "Wow, this guy looks like a Tumblr Artist" y'know?

XD yeah I was asked if I was "PizzaThot" recently... I looked em up. I laughed, their art is very fun but not me XD

In my honest opinion, if someone has the sheer gall to write you a shaming note to make you feel bad for disappointing them with any artistic decision, they don't deserve any of your time.

If they don't want to see something, they don't need to inform you that they're disappointed in you like they're some kind of authority figure in your life. In fact, if they want to see more of your work, they can take the initiative to commission to get more of what they want.

It's a heck of a lot more productive than shaming you for work that they assume is yours.

You know you'd think it'd be obvious. Im sorry you've had to hear anything about it. Yes it's true there's some out there whom imitate your style a bit. But the comparison is like comparing it to something you drew like 6...7+ years ago like 90% of the time.
So your absolutely right one should think b4 they make random accusations.
Someone who would honestly isn't the kind of fan you need anyway.
Let them move along and someone who uses there head take there place.

I never assume somebody drew something just because it looks similar to their style... you'd think other people would have the common sense to do the same. Assumptions just do a good job at making an ass out of the assumer. :P
Sorry you had to be shamed by somebody for something you didn't even do. Even if you DID do it, they need to learn to keep it to themselves. Kink shaming is a shitty thing to do, especially in a community so open and inviting as this one.
If it was something truly distasteful somehow it's likely against the rules of the site and should've been reported, I figure. I dunno. Either way, it gets the point across just as well to list your only account(s) and say if anyone sees you
anywhere else, that it's simply not you! Hopefully you don't run into this sort of issue again, though. :/
