'Hereditary' movie review.... whoa....
General
The less I say about this movie the better.
This is... really on of the most effective horror films I've seen in recent memory and it somehow achieves this without jump scares. This may be the only time I've been to a horror film that made people in the audience gasp, jump and audibly react without resorting to those traditional jump scares. Its a quiet, slow burn horror film and yet somehow the 2 hours just flew by for me.
The most common comparisons I've seen are calling it the Exorcist meets Rosemary's Baby for the current generation. Honestly, I would call it more like a spiritual successor to Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. This movie handles psychological and supernatural horror masterfully. It's amazing the feeling of unease the film manages to put you in. There are things in the shadows and corners of the frame that could have been there for a while before I noticed and it just gave me the chills.
The acting is phenomenal. If lead actress Toni Collette doesn't get nominated for her acting in this film it will be a real travesty. The way she just attacks each of her scenes and her ability to emote is incredible. Not to mention this movie has one of the most deceptively complex plots going on.
It amazing the horror movie tropes this movie avoids. The biggest twist in the film for me actually happens just a little over a quarter into the film. I highly recommend this, especially if you're a horror fan. Now of course not everyone will like it, its as subjective as any genre out there, and some will say "nothin's happening!" for perhaps the first hour. No. There is A LOT happening! Just not what you EXPECTED to happen!
Chris Stuckmann on youtube sums up this movie perfectly I feel, check out his spoiler free review if you have a moment to get an idea of what I'm talking about. And Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gunZsV67rI

Was actually just thinking about you tonight!
So, about this movie, IDK if I'd be into seeing it.
Seems a little too close to home with the whole inherenting crazy or whatever...
At least that's what I took away from the trailers.
I've sadly only seen the three big movies lately, Avengers, Deadpool 2 and Solo...
(also, since we last spoke, I found this sweet YT series called Dead Meat that you might like to check out if you haven't seen it already)
I personally really liked Solo, but I'm also somewhat of a Star Wars fan, though not as big as some... if that makes any sense.
That's pretty cool that Hereditary was filmed in your town, there have been a few movies filmed here too.
Was this a first for you? Or have there been other movies filmed there too?
And I hope you Do check them out, he just finished the Saw franchise (which was actually how I found his channel and I've binged nearly all of his videos by now. Just a few vids left about movies I've not ever seen left to watch when I have the time/am bored)
Honestly, everyone I've seen talk about it and talked to in person seem to really like Solo. It does look fun, I just have a feeling its fan backlash after tlj releasing too close together. Speaking of youtube videos though, I mentioned Red Letter Media, they did a review of Solo and funny enough, while one of them was so-so on it (he felt the first half was kinda boring), the other two, who admit they're not big fans of the Star Wars movies past the original trilogy, said they 'really kinda loved it'. It's really rather interesting to see how many people are saying they like the film while reports are saying how much its bombing at the box office.
Oh no, there's been tons of movies filmed in my hometown, as well as the rest of the state. It's just really cool when you recognize some of the locations they use when watching a movie. They do a good job in Hereditary of keeping it feel like a non specific location though.
I'll definitely check them out.
And it's rather disturbing going back to watch early AVGN episodes where his rants/complaints about a game elicit "you'd rather listen to your only child choking to death than play this game" or something along those lines now that he's actually a dad...
(also, damn, has it already been TWO years since that happened with GirlBusters?)
I don't have any specific preference for my Star Wars media, but I also didn't dislike the beginning of Solo.
Oh yeah? you too? cool.
Between my town of Lowell and our capital of Boston, there's been a bunch of movies filmed around here.
Some to be just Anytown USA, while others are supposed to be the place they're filmed in...
Alright! Cool. Glad to hear it. Let me know what you think of the show/host and stuff. ^_^
Lol, yeah, two years since that fiasco. Funny how quickly everyone shut up about it once it bombed.
haven't been able to check out that channel yet, but I think I've seen a few of their kill count videos. Looks like they just put up a review of Hereditary, so I'll definitely have to check that out.
As a frequent reader of TV Tropes, that sounds like a trope name... will have to remember to look that one up tomorrow when I have the time.
But yeah, There's been quite a few times when he's said something that makes sense for someone who never expected to ever be not-single to say.
I frequently wonder what the story is behind many of these nerdy/YT celebrities getting GFs or wives when you gotta think that they'd be worried that they only liked them for their popularity or whatever.
(I mean, don't most celebrities end up marrying Other celebrities, so they don't have to worry about their partner marrying them for the money and fame, since they know their partner already has that without them?)
Was it really a fiasco/bomb? My mom doesn't want to see Ocean's 8 because she thinks it's gonna be like the Ghostbusters thing... (sadly didn't get to see a movie today... was down to see that, Hotel Artimis or Upgrade)
Ocean's 8 is supposed to be doing better than Solo already...
If you've seen a few of the Kill Count videos, then you've checked him out. Which movies/Kill Counts did you see?
I think James A Janise does a great job recounting the events of the movie and analyzing the gory details.
Also, I recommend the recent videos he did attending a horror convention and him and his (GF? Wife?) gal talking about the new Halloween trailer. that was pretty interesting and insightful.
(was also my first time seeing the trailer...)
I've heard James met his wife in college, though can't confirm that. From the looks of it she has no interest in internet fame, but is fine with the work he does. I'm pretty sure I've heard he has a full time job in addition to the videos he does, so he's most likely well financially regardless of his internet fame. Don't know about celebs marrying other celebs so they don't marry for fame and fortune. Pretty sure they can get prenuptial agreements before marrying that protects their finances in case something like that happens (I seem to recall Paul McCartney suffered one of the biggest financial losses ever when his wife divorced him, yet Brittany Spears was smart enough to protect all her finances before marrying, so when she and Federline divorced she kept all her money)
Ghosbuster 16 did manage to earn back its budget, thanks to the worldwide box office, but taking into account the extra spent on marketing and expectations of its success it actually ended up losing money. It actually only barely beat Ghostbusters II box office run, but lost to the original Ghostbuster run by 120 million. But adjust the original Ghostbusters total for inflation and the original outgrossed the new ghostbusters by 453 million. Ouch.
Technically Solo has outdone Ocean's 8 at the box office, and I doubt Ocean's will surpass the amount of money Solo makes, but considering the budget of each film, 250 million for Solo after Disney screwed that up, and 70 million for Ocean's 8, Ocean's in a much better spot financially.
I honestly can't remember which one's I saw. I'll have to see them to remember
Yeah, what James Rolfe said back then is definitely a Funny Aneurysm Moment now.
Really? You think he still has a day job by now? Most of the bigger YTers are able to bet by on ad revenue, merchandise and fan support. Though it certainly would explain why it feels like it take SO long to get more AVGN out of him... heh.
(Though I'm not complaining, since he puts out content more frequently than some other YTs I like out there)
I had no idea about Paul McCartney, looked up who his wife is and it says he was married 3 times. Linda, Heather Mills and Nancy Shevell... Though funny that Britney, who was legendarily stupid about so many things, bothered to get a prenup. Though it's quite likely that someone either did it For her or Strongly suggested to her that she get one.
lol Ghostbusters 16 makes it sound like I missed 14 more sequels!
Damn, that IS pretty bad. Really goes to show they should have made a 3rd GB movie a LONG time ago. (I wish I had played the GB video game from the early PS3 days, since I heard that it was the closest thing to a GhostBusters 3)
Maybe they meant that this weekend Ocean made more money that weekend than Solo was making that weekend, not over Solo's entire run.
I remember hearing that they had to recast a part after a certain actor wasn't available for reshoots, but did they really screw-up with Solo?
lol. well, if you watched them on your YT account then it's all there in your history...
Sorry to hear that Dead Meat didn't leave that big of an impression on you.
I've actually caught a few myself. There was a MST3K episode called The Brain that Wouldn't Die which features several 'mad scientist' lab scenes complete with smoke, beakers, flasks, etc. and one of the robots quips "meanwhile at Kirk Cobain's house..." The episode aired only 2-3 months before Cobain's death.
In their Rifftrax of Batman and Robin during the scene where Bane goes rampaging through security guards at Arkham with Freeze's armor in a shopping cart one of them quips "Wow, its like WalMart on black friday." The very next Christmas several people were killed in mad black friday rushes in Walmarts.
Another I recently saw was from the show Night Court which was on from the mid 80's through mid 90's. Their 80's computer suddenly starts picking up and broadcasting air traffic data. Unable to fix it, one of the characters just erases everything on the computer, implying doing so also inadvertently erased all air traffic information in the area. Soon after everyone goes quite as the building shakes and the roar of a jet engine can be heard right outside their window. One of the characters runs over and looks up to see one of the jets fly by between the buildings. He turns laughing, saying "You should've seen the look on their faces!" The series... takes place in New York City....
I'm pretty sure that's what I've heard. He was with Screw Attack when he first started, but I think he's pretty independent now, with his Cinnemassacre label. He probably makes a good amount with merchandise, but with the recent monetization issues and rules on Youtube it's hard to tell if they still make him enough money from videos to support himself and his family without a job.
I've played the PC and Wii versions of the Ghostbusters game. It's truly a Ghostbusters sequel to the movies. I've heard one idea for the new Ghostbusters film was sort of an add on to the game where Peter Venkman franchises the Ghostbuster brand and they have several teams and offices around the U.S. and world. In that scenario the new Ghostbusters movie would've followed a group that forms one of the new franchises. Which honestly makes more sense than rebooting the entire series. One awesome idea I heard someone had was, for the climax, having the women realize they're up against an huge army of ghosts and vastly outnumbered. When it looks completely hopeless and like there's nothing they can do, in comes all the other Ghostbusters from the other franchises, forming their own army against the ghosts. And who comes out of the front ghostmobile? The original Ghostbusters! Can't you just see Peter Venkman stepping out and saying "Hey, looks like you could use some help!" And to cap it off, with the untimely passing Harold Ramis, who do they get for the fourth Ghostbuster? Fucking Rick Moranis!! In his first film appearance in over 10 years! And then the battle commences! How epic would that have been!?
That makes a bit more sense. Still, all the expensive executive meddling that ballooned the budget on Solo almost guaranteed it was going to have a bad time. My understanding is the budget for it ended up being even more than all the other Star Wars movies.
I've seen so many, it's hard for a channel or video to leave a huge impact on me. I'll need to watch a few more of their episodes to get a good feeling for them, but I have them on my subscribe list, so I'll be catching more of them.
A couple things that come to mind that preemptivly avoided doing that after 9/11 were Spider-Man, who was supposed to web a helicopter between the two buildings and Lilo & Stitch, who were gonna fly an airplane through a city. (they changed it to a spaceship through the mountainous wilderness)
Speaking of Cinemassacre merchandise, I need to get around to buying some one of these days... (I recently bought a Completionist shirt and pin from The Yetee) I still haven't seen the movie yet, so I'd definitely buy a copy of That...
I have the PS2 version, which plays like the Wii version... didn't play it hardly at all, sadly.
Also, would having a ghost representing Harold Ramis, in the same way as Slimer was supposed to represent Balushi be a good or bad idea?
Speaking of Ghostbusters, did you watch the two cartoon series? The Real and The Extreme?
I thoroughly enjoyed both shows growing up.
And yeah, I'd LOVE to see Rick Moranis return to the big screen again after all these years! (last movie he did was Brother Bear, as the Moose, and Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves for last on-screen acting)
Well, if you figure it out, let me know.
I honestly recommend anyone who's a fan to play both versions. In all honesty, the Wii/ps2 version works better in regards to many of the jokes than the hd version does. One example I remember is that in the hd version there's a sequence where you're with Ray battling ghosts, trying to get to a woman trapped by them. As you follow Ray he has a conversion with Peter over the radio about your movement. Peter gives his sarcastic "Good job, keep it up." comment before Ray tells him you're on your way to save a pretty girl. Peter immediately reports back "I'll be right there!" in a serious tone, which is pretty funny and fits his character perfectly. When you do rescue the woman and Peter shows up Ray makes what sounds like a sarcastic statement about him sitting back and getting coffee while the rest of the team works. OK.... Kinda funny, but comes off as super annoying sarcasm from Ray. In the Wii version however, when Ray first contacts Peter over the radio its done during a cutscene instead of gameplay. When it cuts to Peter what's he doing? Sitting in an empty stairwell, finishing a giant cup of coffee as he radios back "Good Job! Keep it up!" sarcastically. When Ray tells him of the pretty woman he jumps up, spilling the coffee everywhere, and charges up the stairs to help. Seeing that made the comment from Ray make a lot more sense and funnier in my opinion. Also, the first chapter boss is the Stay Puff Marshmallow Man. when you beat him in the hd version you, Ray and Peter are up on the rooftop looking down at the street talking with Egon and Winston in the Ghostmobile down below. You don't see the creamy remains splash the streets or anything, all you get is Peter commenting "that's him you're driving in right now." In the Wii version you get a great view from inside the Ghostmobile as the creamy remains splash down on the street as Winston swerves around them. Also, it's super cool to use the wiimote as a proton pack to blast the ghosts!
I LOVED the cartoon growing up. Never really saw much of the Extreme Ghostbusters though. Always thought it was funny that they had to call it the REAL Ghostbusters because of the other cartoon series with the same name.
My understanding is Rick Moranis returned to his character Helmet from Space Balls in a tv show recently. He quit acting to be a father to his children after his wife sadly passed away. now that they're grown I really, really hope he makes a return to acting!
Also, kinda makes you wonder if there's an alternate universe where 9/11 didn't happen and media was able to stay on track...
Heh, never heard the Ecto1 being called "The Ghostmobile" before, but it's not a bad name...
Hmm, guess I'll either have to get around to playing my PS2 copy sometime or looking for an LP of that version...
It's funny that whenever I read or saw someone talk about the two versions of the game, they never brought up the positives of the cartoony style the old gen version had, just that the next gen version looked so much better...
Yeah, I NEVER heard about the "other" Ghostbusters cartoon/franchise until the AVGN videos that mentioned it. (might have been the Wish Book special that he showed what they were...)
Extreme Ghostbusters could have been called Diversity Ghostbusters, but as a kid it didn't even phase me, I just watched and enjoyed the show without thinking about it.
The cast of Busters was comprised of a white guy in a wheelchair, a black guy, a hispanic guy and a goth girl. (as well as Egon and Jenine returning)
REALLY? He reprised his role on The Goldburgs?! I'll have to look into this to see if it's true! Cuz that'd be SO awesome!
That was such a cool episode! ^_^
And yeah, I'd heard about the whole family thing, but not about the wife thing. I hope so too.
Would be nice to get Grandpa Salinzski's Shrink Machine to come back now that the technology has advanced so much like with Ant-Man. (OOOH! or he could cameo in the Marvel universe as the place where Hank Pym got the idea for his shrinking tech! )
I totally didn't call it that because I forgot what the name of it was.
The problem with a lot of so called 'gamers' is that they hold graphics as the most important part of gaming. I personally don't care what a game looks like as long as its fun. Hell, a lot of the best games I've played in recent years are the retro style games that are basically lost NES and SNES games. (though if I'm going to be brutally honest with myself, I always did feel genesis had very lackluster graphics lol)
Funny enough, that other Ghostbusters series was based on a kids tv show from the 70's. And it was live action strangely enough.
I do remember seeing the cast of the new Ghostbusters. I think I may not have been interested because it only had Egon and non of the other original Ghostbusters. Honestly, the only one I thought was strange to have at the time was the one in the wheelchair. I kept thinking "How would he have made it up all those stairs to confront Gozer? Wouldn't he wear the others out from carrying him?"
That... would be an awesome part for him in Ant-man.
*giggles* lol that's okay. Everyone forgets something that they ought to have remembered or otherwise might get embarrassed they forgot.
(I should find this really cool Tweet with a video where someone saw the Ecto1 and other famous rides on the highway)
Heh. Nice. I know how you mean, I love a lot of retro-style games (and retro games in general), so I'm glad to hear you feel the same way. Would be interested to hear some of the retro games you liked and would like to compare notes on the ones we've both played. (I've actually got a few that I recorded and uploaded videos of to my YT channel that I should continue sometime)
Yeah, There was like a guy in an ape costume if I'm remembering what the AVGN showed in his video...
(Speaking of whom, he posted an awesome video talking about the Halloween franchise and how the new movie connects to the "timeline". If you've not watched it yet, I suggest you do. It was amazing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tpc7eYkVmXk )
Oh, you mean The Extreme Ghostbusters? I wanna say that there might have been an episode late in the series run where the OG busters showed up to help out the diverse cast, but I might have dreamed it up just the same.
My favorite episode of TEG was one where there was an evil genie/wishmaster ghost. (mind you this was LOOONG before I would see The Wishmaster and may have been my first dose of the evil genie trope. If it wasn't the Goosebumps Choose Your Own Scare book on the subject and if you bar The Tale of The Twisted Claw episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark?)
Also, as far as the whole thing with the handicapped GBer, I recall that they delt with it rather well. Even having an episode where there was a ghost that instilled your greatest fear, and that one was another that was pretty good. (I wonder if they're on YT like the New GBs is?)
Yeah? You think so too? Nice. *high-fives the tiger, man* ^_^
Yeah, in the cartoon I think they just made him an actual ape that was just super intelligent (compared with other apes) wonder if there's any fanart of him here.
And I've only played Zelda II . Didn't own it until the GCN Zelda collection.
and can't say I ever beat it myself...
IDK his name, so I couldn't check, but if you know what it is, you could try. (also check e621 as well)
Zelda II is considered sort of a black sheep in the series, mainly just because the gameplay is radically different from anything else in the franchise. But I maintain its still a great game and a classic. I think both Projared in his review and Game Grumps in their playthrough of it stated that, if the game had released under an original name and IP and not part of the Zelda series, the game wouldn't get 99% of the criticism it gets and be considered a pure classic. It did influence a lot of games at the time, like Battle of Olympus and Crystalis. I also remember it for being one of the only times it shows Link and Zelda kissing when you beat the game
Looked it up and its Tracy. And yes, there is some fanart of him.
I AM looking forward to getting to play Koji Igarashi's game sometime...
And yeah, I know that Zelda II was an experiment by Nintendo to see what gamers/fans liked from a Zelda game.
AVGN's video on it did a good job talking about how polarizing the game was.
I agree with that statement as well, since it did feel like a better version of many games like it on the NES that I remember having rented as a kid. Dunno if I ever played Battle of Olympus, but I may have played Crystalis...
Yeah, when AVGN used the Power Glove (probably just a joke, and not really) he beat the game without realizing and the audience got to see the "behind the curtain" kiss between the two.
Tracy the Gorilla? Huh, strange name. So is Tracy supposed to be a female gorilla then?
And where'd you find the art of them? here or e6?
Yeah, a lot of game sequels were different from their original games. Just look at Castlevania 2 compared to 1 and 3.
I remember liking Crystalis. Post apocalyptic world and fun gameplay. think they released a version for GBC too.
Yeah, I like that they use the crouching in the corner trick to win the final battle as he's sporadically waving his arm around.
Found it here, just search: tracy gorilla
If so I'll have to pick up a PSN card to get it. (there's also a few other games I still have in my Cart that I planned on buying later)
I've played the original 3 as well as Circle of the Moon (which I have played the most)
Yeah, quite true. And the Mario 2 we got... does Metroid II count? Star Fox II as well... and probably a bunch more classic Nintendo sequels I'm just not thinking of ...
I can't figure if I played it or just remember seeing it in the rental store shelves and in Nintendo Power... also think that way about a game called Faxanadu
Yes! Exactly.
Okay, will do. thanks.
I highly recommend playing Aria of Sorrow and its direct sequel Dawn of Sorrow if you can. Probably the best in the series of the metroidvania style. They were on a fantastic role with the GBA and DS games.
I've always found it funny that Japan got a Mario sequel that looks exactly like the first. Almost like an expansion would be nowadays. I'm honestly glad they did what they did for the US Mario 2. I feel it expanded the universe and characters. I wouldn't say Metroid 2 was really that different from the first, but I'm glad it wasn't. Only real changes were some of the new abilities and a battery backed up save. Do you mean the StarFox II that was on SNES but not released until the mini bundle? Or Starfox 64? I wouldn't call that much different either. Same basic gameplay, but new vehicles and characters. Just my opinion though.
I didn't get to play faxanadu growing up, but I think it is in the same vein as Zelda II, maybe even a little Castlevania 2. I actually think it takes place in the same universe as the Legacy of the Wizard game. I seem to recall another game in that style that I think was called 'Magician'. I remember it most for the coverage of it in Nintendo Power, had some great artwork to go along with the guide. It was another game I never got to play, so I can't be sure.
Though from what I remembered hearing, the game We got was what Miyamoto always had intended to make Mario 2 into and the DokiDoki characters were a way of testing if the game worked in Japan before putting the Mario characters in it. (Makes me wonder if this happened after Zelda II caused even Japanese fans to call foul)
I suppose you're right about Metroid II, I never played the original GB version, so I guess I wasn't thinking straight. but yes, I DID mean That game. (I really wanna get the SNES Classic so I can get a chance to play it...)
Yeah, there were a lot of games I remember I bothered to read the articles in NP about but never got to play... nowadays if I'm not playing it or don't think I'll plan on playing it, I'll only skim through the pictures and move on... boy we sure had more time on our hands as kids, huh? ^_^
I've heard there's going to be more shipments of the NES and SNES mini's sometime this year, so you should get your chance.
They was a game called Vice Project Doom that was even featured on the cover of an issue that I remember really wanting to play, but could never find a copy to rent. (not that it was always checked out, I just couldn't find a place that rented it) It's honestly the truest definition of a hidden gem. Gameplay and presentation is very derivative of the Ninja Gaiden games, but I mean that in the most sincere way possible. Controls are tighter, the character can pull off more moves, and there's 3 different gameplay style: action platforming (like Ninja Gaiden), action driving (like Spy Hunter), and shooter (light gun stages). The character has three weapons, a whip, gun and grenade, can grab walls, and even run while ducking (something you couldn't do in Ninja Gaiden. The cutscene presentation is almost exactly like Ninja Gaiden. It was a sort of Sci-fi, mystery, cops, body horror, action game that took place in the late 80's, early 90's. Something that didn't do it any favors was the box cover, looks like a completely different game and gets across the wrong idea. The Japanese cover, where it was called Gun-Dec, was infinitely superior.
Funny enough, there was the presentation of one game that had me hooked on reading it, even though at the time it actually scared me to death. For their guide to the game Deja-Vu, they had pics from the game with the character commenting on the mystery surrounding what was going. This included dead bodies, drugs, torture rooms, gambling, sewers, rough streets filled with thugs, shadowy people hiding behind darkened windows, bodies stuffed in trunks of cars, etc. I'm probably making it sound much more intense than it was, it was on the original NES after all, but young little me read and saw all this with such tense imagination I began jumping at the slightest sound. Fortunately they had the answers and explanations on the following pages for each event and photo, but still to this day I remember the effect reading that had on me. I didn't even play the game until they released a version of it on GBC bundled with its sequel.
Well I already have the NES one, but I hope to get the SNES one.
Of the games on the SNES Classic, I already own:
Donkey Kong Country
Kirby Super Star
Kirby's Dream Course (well, I currently have GRUMPS Dream Course...)
Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting (I have Super SFII)
Super Mario World
EarthBound
Mega Man X
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
Super Metroid
Super Punch-Out!!
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Yoshi's Island (I have the GBA version)
So, this would be the first time getting to own (and for many of these, play):
Contra III: The Alien Wars
Secret of Mana
Super Mario Kart
Final Fantasy III
Super Castlevania IV
F-ZERO
Star Fox
Star Fox 2
Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts
Though I AM looking forward to replaying EarthBound, Mario RPG and Super Punch-Out!! with the Classic's save states. ^_^ (besides getting to play Star Fox 1 & 2, Contra III, Castlevania IV and F0)
And the rest of the one's I've got the original SNES cartridges of I've already beaten plenty of times.
(though I might want to give getting the fastest time on Super Metroid a shot with the save states...)
Yes, I believe I watched the Game Grumps play V:PD.
And yeah, I too have that issue, it had binoculars on the cover. was one of the first ones I think I got. (along with Mega Man 3 and the Mario 3 Player's Guide... really wish I still had that one, dunno what happened to it... probably got borrowed and never returned, like a bunch of things in my childhood... and some in my adulthood...)
Still remember how much it sucked to get that one for the 4-Player one with the Football players on it...
Funny, I guess I never rented it either, now that you mention the different style of gameplay. (reminds me of how I found out about The Adventures of Bayou Billy did something similar to much less effect, if the AVGN/Pat the NES Punk video is anything to go by about it)
Strange that I recall seeing that game and Milon's Secret Castle and Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde games on the rental store's shelf, but never bothered renting them. I think the same goes for Fester's Quest too... I wonder if I had Shitty Game Radar as a kid? Hmmm...
Thanks to the NES Classic I now own Ninja Gaiden, but I had Spy Hunter growing up. (also played it a couple time in the arcade)
Never heard the name "Gun-Dec" before tho... sure seems interesting. curious about what "Dec" might stand for in this instance...
Hey~ I got that game on my PS4! It's part of a 3-Pak of games that plays the same, along with Shadowgate and Uninvited.
So far Deja-Vu is the only one I've managed to get anywhere in. It certainly is an interesting game, if short and simple... Though I can easily see the game being too different and mature for any kid to like it.
Pick up the 8-Bit Adventure Anthology: Volume 1 if you're at all still interested in checking out Deja-Vu. I don't think they were all that expensive when I got them...
BTW, that's quite the good memory, there's one of everything you mentioned in that game. Good Work Detective! heh.
(oh. I see you seem to have played a version of it already...)
Currently playing Earthbound again on my 3DS. As often as I played Mario RPG, I never finished it for some reason. Guess I didn't want the experience to end. Heads up on those other games:
Contra III: super fun run and gun action like the previous games in the series, but... SUPER HARD. We got the easy version of Final Fantasy IV, but the super hard version of Contra III.
Secret of Mana: One of my all time FAVORITE games! Beautiful music, graphics, story, etc. Actually better than the crappy, overpriced remake they did recently. Sort of like Zelda meets Final Fantasy.
Super Mario Kart: Probably don't need to say much about this. First in the series and still a lot of fun. Funny enough, was also one of the first games to do crossover characters.
Final Fantasy III/VI: Honestly, the absolute best Final Fantasy game ever in my opinion. Best plot, characters, story, music, gameplay, villain (which funny enough is thanks to the English translation. The Japanese original he just came across as a laughing idiot, but the American translation turned him into the franchises version of The Joker. The sound effect for his evil laugh still sticks with me to this day.) I've played through the game multiple times. Will always be a favorite.
Super Castlevania IV: One of the best, if not the best Castlevania game in the original action platformer style of the series. I've heard it was considered a remake of the very first Castlevania on NES, especially since it features the same character, but everything from the look of it, stage layout, gameplay and music make it feel like an original entry in the series. This was the first SNES game I bought with my own money, soon after getting the system. At the time, the music was some of the most phenomenal I ever heard in a video game. Still stands up to this day.
F-Zero: Again, the first in the series of a popular racing series, still looks really good to this day.
StarFox: The original is still one of my favorite games, though its hasn't aged as well as most other SNES games. The graphics were revolutionary for the time, but the low frame rate is very noticeable (I wonder if they fixed it for the new release?) But even so, the levels are fun and intense, it has the classic 'gibberish' talk of the characters and the soundtrack is absolutely first rate! Still one of my favorite soundtracks to a single game.
Starfox 2: I've played a little of roms of the game, and was interesting from what I remember. You had pretty good freedom to choose what level to go to next and they introduced new vehicles, which would later become the tanks and other vehicles in the sequels. it's really sad the last two games in the series failed so badly, I really hope we can get a good successful sequel sooner or later.
I still have my copy. I still have all but 1 or 2 issues from volume 16 through 232(I think?) Some are in better condition than others, depending on how much I used them when playing games, lol. And yeah, getting that one that was dedicated to the 4-player games felt like a complete cheat and waste. I remember getting it only 1 or 2 issues after the Final Fantasy volume. I like the Final Fantasy issue fine now, but at the time I had no interest in the series, so it felt like a complete waste not to have an issue talk about more than one game.
I did rent Bayou Billy after seeing it on the shelf of the rental store for a long time. Didn't enjoy it. Like AVGN and PTNP say, the first level is way WAY to hard. It should have been a beat' em up like Double Dragon, but you never get to see past the first half the first level. If the first level had been the last level it probably would have made a huge difference. I also rented Milon's Secret Castle and, while I did play it a lot, just got completely lost in the beginning rooms. Same with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, couldn't figure out what the hell was going on in that game when I tried to play it. Didn't play Fester's Quest except at a friends house. Would've been a good game if they just fixed the shooting so you're shots weren't blocked by walls and toned down the early difficulty a little. Still I wouldn't say the game's a complete waste.
Each time I see the cover for Gun-Dec, I keep thinking the artist traced over a pic of Bruce Willis pointing a gun.
Funny enough, Shadowgate can be finish in a bout 15 minutes if you know what to do. I've completed it and Deja-Vu, but not Uninvited, which is probably the only one that's meant to be the scary, lol. I see they have them on Steam, maybe I'll check them out one day
I've beaten Mario RPG numerous times and played through EarthBound a few times as well, though IDK if I ever beat it on my own merits alone.
Where are you/where'd you get in both of them?
Yeah, the Contra games are tough, but at least the save states will make most of these games easier to get through.
I do believe I played some of Mana before, but didn't get into it... and The Completionist played the remake not too long ago for his channel, I think he didn't like the changes very much either.
I've played SMK before, just never owned it. Who was crossed over in that game?
Oh? this Final Fantasy game is the one that Kefka is from? Also, that laugh was also used in Chrono Trigger.
Funny, last night's episode of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure had them playing a knock-off F-Zero~
Maybe a StarFox Switch game is in the works and will be his return to form?
Okay, wow, pretty crazy that we both kept our NP collection. I sadly didn't get my subscription renewed around the time of the GCN (like 176), since I was starting to become more of a PlayStation and GameInformer guy... But I DID pick up the issues on MGS The Twin Snakes and Resident Evil: Deadly Silence, and maybe I got the last issue? I know I got a couple of the late issues...
Yeah, eventually they started publishing full strategy guide books that weren't numbered volumes.
But glad I'm not the only one who felt cheated.
BTW, did you ever take out any of the posters? Or did you leave them all in the books?
Dunno if you've ever played Blaster Master, but that plays like a better version of Fester's Quest.
But interesting to know that someone else saw all those games in the rental stores as well, but DID decide to rent them and found out how bad they were.
It's quite possible. Like how Metal Gear is just Kyle Reese from Terminator.
I need to give Shadowgate and Uninvited another go sometime... DeJa Vu is also one that can be completed quite quickly if you know what to do and in what order.
And cool. Glad to know you've played some of them and might play them again sometime too.
The sequels have also been great, from meeting their younger self in Partners in Time, to literally controlling Bowser from inside him in Bowsers Inside Story. Dream Team is also great, but I haven't had a chance to play Paper Jam yet.
I'm currently to the desert in Earthbound.
The thing that makes Contra III harder is that it only gives you around 7 lives to get through it instead of 30 like the Japanese version.
the beginning of Secret of Mana does take some grinding to get through until you get magic, but its well worth it. Soundtrack is absolutely amazing too. Yeah, I watched Projared play it for about 3 or 4 episodes. (Did he have anymore episodes? i lost interest in the new verison there) It honestly felt like he was trying to enjoy it, it feels like he has the same love of the original that I do. A lot of the music remixes are horrible and ruin the feeling the original got across, the graphics aren't anything special and look like it was meant for a mediocre release on phone. The unneeded voice acting is some of the worst I've ever heard too. It also does little to fix some of the translation issues. Which weren't terrible in the original, just needed some fine tuning. (there's actually a version of the original online called the vwf edition that cleans up the dialogue, fixing some plot holes and making it a lot more coherent. Funny how fans can do a better job than a corporation,,,)
Technically Donkey Kong crossed over into the Mario universe for the game and it was the first time multiple characters from the same series were in one game as playable characters. (Donkey Kong wasn't, at least at the time, considered part of the Mario universe. He was considered part of his own series, named after him.) Still, some may consider Super Smash Bros to be the true first game to feature big crossovers of characters.
Yep, Kefka is the big bad in Final Fantasy III/VI.
Fox is making an appearance as a playable character in Starlink: Battle for Atlas later this year. Hopefully this will lead to a full Starfox game https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3ZffcWXx_I
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZ00xyvtNQ4
I think I remember trying to take out one or two of the posters, but left most of them in. Didn't want to ruin them and didn't have anywhere to hang them.
I have and actually own the new Blaster Master on Switch. Definitely a better version of Fester's Quest gameplay and a good Metroid style game.
Yeah, aren't the two characters used on the cover of Contra basically traces of Schwarzenegger and Stallone with changes made here and there to make them... legally different?
Yeah, I've heard of Fawful and his word salad/non sequitur dialog. I'm unsure if it'd be as fun after all this time and IDK when I'd be able to find the time to play them... the convenience of the Classic Edition games made them more appealing I guess. IDK. Not that I've played the NES one in months...
I've played the original 3 Paper Mario games as well... I beat the first two, never got around to finishing Super Paper Mario...
So, Dusty Dune's Desert? or Scaraba?
And you mentioned that you never finished Legend of the Seven Stars, how far did you get? can you remember anything about it? (that was such a great game... why have we still not had any proper sequel to it?)
Hey, 7 lives is a lot more than the 3 extra lives Contra originally gives you...
Speaking of videos, I'm currently watching this Slopes Game Room video on The Complete History of F-that was posted today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cl9xTw2iR8A
(and I still have to get around to watching Jared's new video as well)
Guess I wouldn't be able to do the voice over for the game myself on the new version like I was doing with the 999 game and Yooka-Laylee... lol
That's strange to me, since Mario originated from the Donkey Kong arcade game. Mario was the antagonist in Donkey Kong Jr. (wait, was DK Jr. really DK 2? Cuz there's a Donkey Kong 3 with Stanley the Bug Man...)
*nods* I know how you feel about the posters, but my mom Did take out a considerable number of them... worst was when the back of a particularly cool poster was the long, fold-out map of a game I was playing...
I have BM on NES, WiiU and Blaster Master Zero on my 3DSXL.
And yeah, I suppose you're right, it IS a Metroid style game! (they both could have used a map...)
Bill Rizer and Lance Bean are pretty much Expys of Alan "Dutch" Schaefer and John Rambo...
(makes you wonder if there's a reason the player character in Predator the NES game didn't look a thing like Arnold and instead was dressed in pink...)
Trust me, the lines they give Fawful make him timeless. I still laugh each time I read his dialogue.
Don't know how far you got in Super Paper Mario, but it had some hilarious stuff in it too. (among some of the darkest stuff seen in a game, regardless of rating)
Dusty Dunes. Can't remember how far I got in Mario RPG, but I had all the characters in the party from what I remember. Technically, I think the Paper Mario and Mario and Luigi games are sequels to it.
Is that the Final Fantasy IV review? It was quick good, and his one criticism of it is understandable. Even he admits that as much as he doesn't like the one part he doesn't like that it's the most 'Final Fantasy' game he can think of and recommends new people to the series to play it first. Even recommending the 3d DS remake as much as the original.
I don't know, anything would sound better than the voice acting in that game
Well, from what I understand, at the time the character in Donkey Kong (the arcade) was just referred to as Jumpman. Mario didn't come along until the Mario Bros arcade game, then his universe was established with the first Mario game. So Donkey Kong and Mario Bros were considered different universes at the time. So having Donkey Kong Jr in Mario Kart was considered a crossover of the two series at the time. It can get confusing at times, given what was considered cannon at the time, compared to now. For example, Donkey Kong Jr in the game is the son of the original Donkey Kong and the father of the current Donkey Kong that appears in the Smash Bros and Donkey Kong Country games. Cranky Kong is the original Donkey Kong and the grandfather of the current Donkey Kong. Makes sense?
Funny to consider how revolutionary Super Metroid was to the genre. Not only did it have superb graphics, level design, music, etc. But most important, it introduced a map system to the genre that was desperately needed.
I've heard due to licensing issues, they had to make the player character in the game as generic as possible. Otherwise they'd have to pay more for licensing Arnolds likeness. The main reason the player character in the Minority Report game doens't look anything like Tom Cruise.
Francis was probably my favorite part.
I know I got to a part where the player is repeatedly asked if they want a helmet so they can breathe, which you can refuse for like a dozen times and get a game over.
I never made it to the world that disappears...
Yeah "technically". But it's not quite the same. I'm sure there's plenty of fans of Legend of the Seven Stars who would agree. ^_^
You got Mallow, Geno, Bowser and Toadstool. Sounds like you got at least 2/3rds the way through the game.
Oops, IDK how I didn't type "The Complete History of F-Zero"
For Projared's review of Final Fantasy IV: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqzTeeK1ZJ4
I've played the PS1 version a bit, as it came with the Chrono Trigger game.
Woah. THAT bad, huh? Can you think of/name any comparably terribly voiced games that you'd consider it STILL worse than?
Well, I suppose that would mean is the Mario-looking figure capturing DK in DK Jr. appear before or after Mario Bros. arcade game?
Also, this whole relationship business with Cranky and DK with the forgotten DK Jr in the middle just makes me think of Joseph and Josuke Joestar from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (and really the whole Jojo family legacy in general as well)
Indeed. And then Castlevania: Symphony of the Night took the map and ran with it.
There's a Minority Report game?
Also, speaking of Tom Cruise movie license games, have you seen or heard about the one based on The Mummy?
And as far as games licensing the likeness of the film's protagonists, I wonder if there's a site dedicated to how much or how little the game devs made the player character resemble the actors?
Was Francis the nerd iguana? That character absolutely killed me. The part of the game that gets really dark is the River Twygz section. Just look at the description. "The River Twygz is a subsection of The Underwhere in Super Paper Mario. It is evidently filled with the tears of sinners that give it a purple color. The river is inhabited by Underhands, invincible, skeletal hands that will damage Mario and co."
Honestly, and Projared mentions this in his review, to get the best Final Fantasy IV experience you should play one of the other versions, like the SNES, GBA, PSP or DS verisons. The ps1 version suffers big time from slowdown and terrible load times. The fast pace and excitement of the battles is badly handicapped in that version.
As bad? Well, a lot of games from the 64, ps1 era, especially the likes of the original resident evil and sotn, maybe even House of the Dead 2 or the zeld cdi titles, but even those might sound better. There are independent games that have worse voice acting, but this is from a big developer and retails for 40$! No excuse for such poor quality. Still, might be better than The Town With no Name....
Yeah, sotn is basically Metroid reskinned for Castlevania and an added rpg element. Maps make all the difference in those type of games.
Yeah, it was released on Gamecube, ps2 and xbox.
I've seen that, mummy demastered or something like that? I think its also Metroidvania and made to look like a snes title. I've actually heard good things about it and I think its made by the same developer as the Shantae games and the Ducktailes remaster
Yesh indeedy he was! Glad you liked his character too. ^_^
So the River Styx of Mario.
*nods* I watched it this morning before I left for work, funny that he singled out the one version I owned. Perhaps that could have been a reason I wasn't able to get too deep into it...
Though that doesn't explain why I didn't get into VII or IX.
(The Active Battle System probably didn't help me get into it tho... )
(I've never played the original Resident Evil, well, if you don't count Deadly Silence, which I still need to get around to finishing...
"Jill. Here is a lockpick. It might come in handy if you, 'the master of unlocking', take it with you."
"What is a man? A miserable little pile of secrets! But enough talk, have at you!"
lol, TTWNN, I think I saw PBG or BrutalMoose cover that game...
Yeah, I think that's the name of it. Oh? the Shantae and Ducktails remastered? I have those games! ^_^
To be brutally honest, I NEVER liked ff vii. It actually ruined the series for me. I hated the characters, the story didn't feel nearly as inspired, the music SUCKED compared to the previous games, and the gameplay was slowed waaaaaay down because of the new 3d system. The only reason it was popular was because they showcased the prerendered cutscenes as the game and it was the first game in the series many people played. Honestly, the only square enix game of that generation that I truly enjoyed and felt captured their former glory was Xenogears.
Deadly Silence is basically the original ps Resident Evil on DS, so you can safely say you've played it.
Yeah, BrutalMoose did a review of it.
So, should I take this to mean you're not looking forward to the FFVII remake that's been teased for so many years?
How about Cloud and Sepheroth's appearances in Kingdom Hearts?
They added some new things to Deadly Silence, but yeah, it really does seem like it's mostly just the PS1 version.
Yeah, I could seriously care less. Only game that involves either of them that I've ever been excited for is Super Smash Bros. I don't mind Kingdom Hearts, but I never cared for it that much. Always felt massively overhyped to me. I had fun with the first game, enjoyed the different take on it with the GBA game, then really quickly lost interest in 2. I've played the DS and 3ds games they've made and feel they're.... ok? Good maybe? But again there's little to nothing gameplay wise that keeps me hooked very long. It often feels like the only appeal to them is throwing in all the icons and locations of the games and disney properties
They've actually ported quite a few ps games to DS, its actually kinda surprising to me.

I've watched the videos on Screem, Leprechaun, Alien, Child's Play/Chucky (minust Cult and Curse, since I've not seen those two yet), Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm St., Saw, Black Christmas, The Thing, Get Out, Night of the Living Dead, IT, The Mist, My Bloody Valentine and The Strangers.
It's the Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie one, and considered a classic.
Can definitely feel the inspiration from it. Both have a strange and freaky feeling of unease throughout.
He posted his review of The Purge.
He's reviewing the whole series in time for the new one on July 4th.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBPKkq2Smp4 The Purge Kill Count!
Yeah, I too really like the way he presents the information (and throws in little flourishes of jokes and such throughout)
Not sure if I've ever seen any videos like his before, but I've also never sought out anything like it before.
Cinemassacre's Monster Madness might be the closest thing...
Glad to hear you'll watch more of them (presumably tomorrow)
I shall look forward to hearing your thoughts on whichever videos of his you end up watching. ^_^
