ER visit & Allergic Reaction -Emergency Commissions for Rent
7 years ago
So update on my life:
Many of you know that the guy that lives under us, in the illegal basement apartment, chainsmokes me into asthma attacks. We've complained many times to the landlord, to the guy himself - begging him to smoke outside since it's a smokefree building. The smoke has come up through the vents in the floor, and after duct taping them, through wall outlets and cracks in the house. We had to keep our heat off in the winter of I'd start gasping for air and my lungs would close up - I use an inhaler but that can't stop the smoke, obviously.
I wrote an email last weekend, begging the rental office to do something (and the landlord) - that I wasn't trying to start trouble but I now had a persistant cough and thought I'd be in the hospital shortly. Well, they did something - but it was too late and I ended up in the ER today because I've been having more and more coughing and trouble breathing. They kicked him out, I guess terminated his lease (if he had one, which I don't think he did because he would mow the lawn or shovel snow in some deal with the landlord for living there). He's no longer living there, as of midweek this past week. The ER diagnosed me with Bronchitis and inflamed airways, wrote me some prescriptions, and sent me on my way.
Aftering taking the medications I almost immediately felt a burning and itching sensation in my mouth, hands, and palms. About 4 minutes after taking them I had broken out in hives from head to toe, was so hot and red and felt like I'd burst into flames. It reminded me of the reaction I had last fall when I was getting accepted into the graduate program at school - same reaction. I realized one of the medications I was prescribed was one I'd taken that day I'd ended up in the ER, red, itchy, and my lungs were closing up and it was hard to breathe. I'm VERY allergic to this medication apparently. We called the pharmacy, they said to take a shitton of Benadryl basically... so I did that, ate some bread, and covered myself in icepacks to feel better. I chewed one for faster relief. It made the difference (in the fall I'd only taken one benadryl, this time I took 3).
I'm glad that I'll soon be breathing easier, but I'm not thrilled that I got to discover I had a supremely bad allergy to a common drug (that I've had in the past before today and the fall, and never had reactions to).
Now here I am, after a hazy nap, feeling very groggy and stressed. Rent is due tomorrow, I have about 40$ to my name. If you have any ideas for commissions you'd like, throw them my way - I'm rather desperate at the moment.

I hope you're okay and that things get better quickly!
Sorry to hear that the responsible parties refused to act after an actual medical issue developed. Glad to hear that you're on the recovery side. Only wish I could do more that wish you well.
