So many things are going on :D
I went to comiccon this week end in my hometown, had a blast!!! I walked around so much tho I slept all of sunday XD I met other artists, I saw awesome cosplays and talked with a bunch of game devs looking for artists. Networking all over the place. Trying to show examples of my work that wasn't porn O.O
I got this genius idea when I was browsing artist alley at comiccon: I want to go to a con and sell stuff. I've been looking into Furnal Equinox and CanFURence. I have to travel cause there aren't any in my hometown since last year. Thing is, I have never been to a furry con... so I might pop around CanFÈURence in august as a guest to have a look around before booking a table for Furnal Equinox.
I figured I could still sell stuff at comiccon but I would have to make fanart. mind you I saw a few fursuiters, i guess they don't have a con to go to anymore :(
So I don't know, I'm thinking of going to a furry con and I'm worried cause I've never been :P I also don't think of my stuff as highly as I think of the artists I see at cons, selling prints of their art! I mean they have the guts to do it, that's impressive to me. I think i'd need to work on polished pieces for a con.
I've been toying with the idea of making art books. like 20 images, exclusive to the art book, one SFW, one for general NSFW, a vore one, a preggo one... you know, something for everyone. Then I could sell that at the con. I don't know about selling online cause then people have to pay shipping, shipping is costly :(
I'm just thinking out loud. If you guys wanna tell me what you buy/look for at cons, I'm super willing to hear it xD
Also YCH and Commissions are closed until possibly september. There is a very month of august coming up!!! This will give me time to wrap up the entire current list! If i open it might be for 1 or 2 spots.
So yeah! That's life right now xD Still having weird dreams about the upcoming wedding. not all nightmares but I always forget things on the wedding day xD

As for you going to a con and sell stuff, that should be your decision. ^^ If you feel you can do that and work on commissions at the same time, go for it! But ultimately, you must decide the best path that works best with your workload and such. ^^;
I'd say you should totally go for a fur con! If you enjoyed the comic con, you should a fur con even more. It's unfortunate you don't have one so conveniently close anymore, but if you can afford to travel a bit, it's totally worth it. :3
I can understand that nervousness of trying to sell in the Dealer's Den, but I'd be inclined to think you don't have anything to worry about. Look at your queue! The point at which you have to start closing for commissions because you just have too much demand, you know you've got something going. I can understand the inclination of wanting to make something a little more polished and special for a con, but if you bring that same charm you always have, you should gather people's attention.
The books are an interesting idea. For myself and my mate, I can tell you the things we tend to look for are shirts, stuffed animals, artists we're unfamiliar with with who have styles we would like to commission ourselves in, decor pieces, and other unique finds that just happen to grab our attention. We tend to get really picky with our selections because the fandom has so many cool things that we would probably bankrupt ourselves within a year if we didn't. We've gotten some interesting things, though, including badges, sketches, magnets, and prints. For our part, a book that's not our sonas would have to do a really good job, since there's so much art accessible online already, but it's kind of like games: there's a ton of free ones, and some of those are really good, and not all pay for games are good, but you often get what you pay for, and the price tag often carries a greater promise that the game will be worth our time. Plus there's that mystique behind something that's more exclusive because it's only accessible through something like that purchase. If you look at your pieces that have the most attention, look at the common trends that people like (for my part, when it comes to vore, I particularly like sequences/comics), and use those to inspire polished works that you can create a few versions of, like the SFW, vore, or preggo, then all you'd need to do is get people to take a peek at your book while in the Dealer's Den, and you should have no problem making some sales.
As for selling online, I understand what you're saying about the shipping, but I would say as long as people are willing to pay it, what's the harm in offering?
I know I've already gone on for awhile (much longer than I meant to, and I apologize about that), but I did have one more idea I thought I'd put out there. I have no idea how well it would go over, but you could always try something like finished pieces that have two characters, one of which is complete, and the other is a generic outline, kind of how your YCHs look now but maybe with a bit more detail, that actually says "YCH" on the character. Rather than selling these as traditional YCHs, since they would be included in a book where the images are exclusive to that book, it would allow people to look at the book and imagine themselves in the position of the YCH. You could maybe have that as part of your library: the SFW, the Preggo, the Vore, the YCH Dom (vore, yiff, or something else), and the YCH Sub (again, vore, yiff, or something else). You could even make it easy and have multiple versions of the same book: the completed vore book where both characters are fully detailed, and the YCH versions that replace one of the characters with the YCH, and then people can choose which version they want.
you make a good point about the queue and selling art, I'm blind to the obvious stuff!!! it sells online, it's going to sell elsewhere! DUH, wake up iggly bunny
I was super interested in the part you talk about what you look for at cons! Everything I find things about con, people say that they buy small cheap things, like stickers and charms and pins! which I'm guessing is true but it's awesome to hear about the other stuff people buy and look for! I was actually planning on having a few shirts up and you have now re-assured me that some people do look for those :P ,m not going to have a crazy inventory for shirts.
I really appreciate your input on the art side! That's one of my biggest challenge is people of the furry fandom like to have their characters in the art! Which makes sense :P so i think selling random character art will proove difficult. I think thats the kind of products on which i gotta expect the least amount of sales and so not have too many made. I think I'm going to have to make sure to include a lot of species in my books!
The ych variant is an interesting idea, im deffo going to consider it! Maybe I could sell those kinds of posters online and then you pay for your character to be put in and printed and sent to you? mmm I dunno yet, so many things are possible!
Thanks so much for taking the time to answer and comment ^^
I gotta keep in mind that most of the things i bring to display has to be a majority of pg 13 xD
True, with so much money already going to travel, hotel, con registration, and food, there is a definite appeal to the small items in the Dealer's Den. I've seen dakimakuras and full suits, though, so I know there's a market for bigger stuff. I'm curious to see what your shirt ideas are. :3 I don't know if we'll be at the same con anytime soon, since we have a border between us that didn't used to require passports, but I'd certainly want to check out your booth if that ever happens.
You are right about people's interest concerning their characters in art, and probably the books. A good variety of species could at least help people with finding general interest and at least one image they can create at least some personalized attachment to. Not being able to magically discern who will want the books does prevent you from printing ones that just happen to have people's sonas already in them, though, so the personalized sona aspect will always be a challenge with them. :/ That's what led me to the idea of the books with semi-complete semi-YCHs that people can imagine themselves in the place of. Don't know how well it would work, but it's at least somewhat unique.
The posters are an interesting idea. :3 I don't know about other people, but I know my mate and I want to find some good art of our sonas to put on our walls. Posters would be a possible way to do that. Of course, if they were NSFW, I might have to take them down when my Mom visits. :P
Like you said, that's where the validity of pg 13 comes into play. Most of the Dealer's Den is SFW. It's often easier to put up and display, and will still give people an idea of your style incase they want to commission you later. (Having business cards, or even just slips of paper with your name and FA on them, can help here.) I have seen plenty of adult stuff in the main Dealer's Den, though. It just usually needs to be labeled as such, and any overtly adult elements hidden from direct sight with a cloth or sticker or something. The only stuff you need to worry about getting shoved to the 18+ Dealer's Den is primarily just the Bad Dragon stuff and whatnot. At least at the cons I've been to.
I suppose really the big thing is just trying to find something unique that really catches people's attention. This is where it's helpful you can see so many different possible options. Finding talented artists with interesting styles is always good, and a con can always get you discovered by people who might not have come across you online. People certainly are on the lookout for that. It's not usually too hard to find interesting styles online, though, so having something particularly eye-catching and unique can definitely draw attention. Of course, it's not always easy to tell what will accomplish that. My mate and I found this one set of prints on display that we really liked:
https://www.deviantart.com/feretstu.....ek-1-431717317
I thought it was really cute. I found out later from the artist, though, we were possibly the only people who ever bought the full 5 images of the set. :/ Conversely, when we were at Midwest Furfest last year, we bought badges from an artist who makes the badges out of perler beads. That one, we weren't the only people who thought that was an interesting idea. That artist became booked full-time for the next 3 months on commissions for those badges at MFF.
You probably got the idea awhile ago. :P Granted, you don't have to go unique; it just can help, even if it's just one unique item to pull people in to see the rest of what you have. Art books do already exist, but new ones done in the right way can still get good attention. Take a couple completed posters, and I see those drawing eyes to your booth. Now that I think more on the shirts, I don't see that many booths have them at fur cons I've been to, but they've sold well when they are there. If you can do woodworking, that should get you noticed. Figurines can be good. Do you do embroidery or needlepoint? I've never seen furry art in that medium ever! Of course, there might be a reason for that. :P It would certainly be unique, though. :3
