Well in Gate: Jieitai, the story focused on modern military venturing to another world. As expected, the world has variety of races. If the artwork of the manga wasn't that mediocre, I bet this fandom might find it interesting (ignoring the political shitstorm and JAPAN STRONK idea)

That does sound a bit off :O Especially considering Japan's armed forces are very weedy compared to the likes of China :O

It also kind of reminds me of how Japan viewed India in WW2 and scoffed at how diverse it was, and then they got massacred in a northern area called Nagaland by the people there, who are nicknamed Headhunters for obvious reasons :p

Well, that's because the army from fantasy earth declared war on japan by invading Tokyo. Obviously it didn't work as expected...

Rather than destroying the Gate as similar structure might just reappear somewhere else, Japan decided to send their forces to fortify the other side of the gate and thus their military having some sort of adventure while trying to bring the evil empire to justice

Kind of weird how they'd invade Japan when there's far more juicier targets on Earth :o

I think not all of them are feral though. In one of the side chapter, there's a girl minotaur hanging in town's bar, while a JSDF photographer commented.

oh, I dislike the anime, the manga and the novel are my best source for world building. Honestly, it's a great concept, something that never been done before.

i like how unlike most stories, they show how honestly effective modern military gear would be within a fantasy setting

More like a massacre. So easy to slaughter thousands of troops (and dragons!) with AA, tanks, and rifles

you know that there are great deal of people disapprove because the villain could just use magic But it's a low fantasy setting, and I doubt magic has been integrated well with the society. Aside from the magical city, no other people use magic

Its also noted that most magic is weak. And even the likes of Rory or the other avatar types are rendered quite usless when the moderns figure out how they work

Yeah, but they cannot be killed tho. As for magic, only Lelei who manage to combine real world physics to her magic, making her second strongest mage after her mentor. Not sure about the other mage, but I saw that they're pretty strong, if not competent. Luckily they're not siding with the Empire and comfortable enough in their walled city

I saw most of the first season of that. I sort of liked it. The dialogue and initial story were cheezy to the point of being bad, but the world was very nicely done and the explanations of tactical maneuvers were interesting. The protagonists automatically win with no effort due to obviously superior firepower and tactics, and I think the story would have been much better if there was real conflict and chance of defeat. I understand why they did it that way, to publicly promote the JSDF, but I still think it would have made for a better story to have some more struggle and conflict. Still, it was satisfying to see hot headed villains with swords get gunned down now and again.

Now that you reminded me of it, I will probably go finish watching it.

I might try reading some of it. I have to settle for questionable fan translations though.

I mostly prefer anime, especially when it comes to action scenes. Military action anime is always a favorite of mine, like Black Lagoon and Full Metal Panic, which I understand has a new series coming out.
