I dont play it but i assume its all a matter of perspective.people go into graveyards for the curiousity to look at old headstones.I assume some goth types have gone there for atmosphere.As long as youre quiet and act respectful to anyone already there,I dont see what harm you are doing.

I walked through a graveyard almost daily where I lived before to get to work and the local park. I'd have my Pokemon Go on as I walked to see what Pokemon showed up and never had any qualms about it. Even the entrance to the cemetery was a poke stop

I think that as long as you are respectful of graves and dont just go traipsing about everywhere, it should be just fine. People visit graveyards all the time for different reasons, so I dont see why it would be a problem for you to go there to get Pokemon. Im sure there are others who go there for that exact reason.

There's quite a few churches where I am and majority of them are Pokestops. I'm normally on the bus though and all the graveyards are pretty small, so I can't really comment, although when I've had to walk through graveyards, I always felt I should be quiet. I guess as long as you're not disturbing anyone you should be fine.

the graveyard behind my house has a stop and a gym, and are the closest places to where i live. i don't have an issue with it, but you need to be careful that others won't. the graveyard behind my house is the big public one here in town, so they don't mind people entering it during its open hours (basically sunup to sun down)
but some graveyards might be more private, or have rules about visitation, so it would be a good idea to check those out before you spend time there.
either way, you also need to make sure you are respectful.. try to stick to the roads and paths whenever possible, don't touch any flowers left at a grave unless it is to fix ones that had been blown off a grave or knocked over by someone else, and definitely don't litter or vandalize.
as far as quiet goes, you don't have to behave like it is a library, but try to avoid shouting or loud noises, the way you would in any other public place. especially if you can see other people there.. there is a very good chance any one else you see at one is there to visit the grave of a family member or ancestor, and likely will be feeling some strong emotions.

i would generally recommend only doing it during the day as well.. even if it is open at night, odds are that people wandering around a graveyard in the dark is going to attract the wrong kind of attention, and it is more liekly that someone will end up calling the police on you, thinking you are there to vandalize or otherwise cause problems. (the one behind me actually had this issue.. some group of people decided to make a run on the gym around midnight, to take it over. this was back when taking over a gym was a lot more involved, mind you. they made so much noise that the police got called in. they scattered before the police arrived, but "those people throwing a party in the graveyard" was part of the town gossip for weeks afterwards. i wasn't present.. but i did have the game open and saw the gym change colors, so i put 2+2 together when i heard the gossip.)

I only visit the graveyards once to get the badges on my chart if a gym is there, otherwise I tend to stay away for respectfulness. The main graveyard in the center of town also had the entire area cleared of stops and gyms in the second week of the game, it had been okay while Ingress was the game since it was a small number of players, but PoGo brought a massive influx of people just driving through at all hours, it wasn't good.

To me, it's a matter of respect. Going to the graveyard for the sole purpose of playing a game to me is disrespectful to the dead resting there. You are not entering for them, or the land, but for entertainment on a game. If your main reason for being there isn't to travel through, look into the people there (such as if it is your job, or you are trying to check records, etc.), visit relatives' ando/or friends' headstones/grave, then you're being disrespectful.

But that is my opinion! I was raised to have a deep respect for graveyards and the people who rest there. Where I come from, people do not go the the graveyard unless they have business there. They are meant to be left undisturbed otherwise. I can understand in other towns, and areas, a graveyard might be more 'public' and 'busy', though.
