So how does this twitter thing work?

I'm usually quite good with tech (I used to work in IT, etc) but I've never figured out social networking. I just can't imagine that people are interested in what I'm eating for lunch or whatever inannity people post about, but I'm about to head out to Quakecon (quakecon.org for those who don't know what it is) and I thought I'd give it a shot.
Only I don't really know how to use it. I'm "Dynotaku" on twitter, so does that mean you can follow me if you go to http://twitter.com/Dynotaku ? And people can post things to me right? How does that work?

Ahhh.. yeah. Sorry no clue on the twitter thing. I tend to be behind a little. Just got a facebook last month. o_o;
all I know about twtter is that I have no intrest in it at all
Don't call it a twit unless it's a tweet about This Week in Tech.
U follow a person and receive any of their tweets and vice versa. Anyone following you will receive your tweets. But if they arent following they will receive nothing you post.
Yes people can send private messages to and fro as well. Im not sure how it works cuz I use my normal messengers but im sure you'll figure that out in due time.
It's like IRC on a cork board, posting short (140-character) messages on post-it notes. It's 140 characters short because you can update by cell phone via SMS (although it's slow in many respects). It also means you gotta get to the point -- and since it's public, you gotta watch what you say, because everyone will read it... like here.
But that doesn't stop folks. ;)
In seriousness, for me personally, I've found that doing microcontent messes with my already-terrible habits for getting longer writing done. I hope I can change my habits, which is why I have the twitter account in the first place, but that time is not yet.
it's that.
this sums it up well.
As a side note, I find Twitter very useful when you're out. One big one I've noticed is like at cons, you can say, "Anyone want to go out to dinner?" and get replies back. It's a one-to-many SMS, instead of one-to-one. Like a broadcast.
The way most people use it (IM HAVIENG A VENTI LATTE NOW NOM) is stupid.
