Wildstar (the MMO) is shutting down... :( How to help
7 years ago
I'm sure most of you don't have any attachment to the MMORPG called "Wildstar." So here's a short explanation:
Wildstar was one of the many MMOs that were created to compete with World of Warcraft in an attempt to get a slice of what they believed was a limitless supply of cash.
Unlike most MMOs though, Wildstar was science-fantasy, as opposed to being based around swords and sorcery, like nearly all of its contemporaries. And also unlike most other MMOs, it was deliberately irreverent and humorous in its take on space adventures. A space war between two factions. The Exiles (drunken rebels) and the Dominion(stick-up-ass empire). I was Dominion. It also had one of the deepest and most customizable player housing systems ever created. There's truly nothing like it today. This was like, the EXACT sort of thing I liked.
But sadly, the game's terrible management and a series of bad decisions led to this game losing most of its audience. Nobody blamed the setting, the characters, the story, or the graphics or gameplay. But it was geared almost exclusively to hardcore players, which alienated the incomparably larger casual player base. And now, 4 years after its release, the studio behind the game is shutting down... and so is the game.
There are people working to keep the game alive, and keep the community alive, even if the official game itself closes down. If you’re interested in helping out, please send me a PM and I’ll give more information. It will be copy-pasted information, so please bear that in mind.

Not that ANet is exactly great at making a good MMO. At least it's still relatively alive.
I do know the feeling. Gigantic and Runic Entertainment are gone, too. :c So much for hopes of an MMO style Torchlight game.
I'm never likely to play any, but wishing you the best with keeping it going.
I logged on last night to take some screen shots of my character and my house, with 4 separate versions of each house shot with my 4 favorite Sky settings.(Dark, Stormy, Hazy and Two-Suns)
From what I understand, the game was originally going to be tab based, until executive meddling occurred who wanted it to have a telegraph based combat system. The hardcore playerbase focus was a really bad move, since the hardcore raiders only make up about 1% of any MMO playerbase, so you can't expect to make all your money off of them. Not sure about later in it's life span, but when the game first came out, your most basic 5-man dungeon was as hard or harder than, for example, a Mythic difficulty end of expansion final boss raid dungeon from World of Warcraft. When your most basic dungeon experience is associated with endless suffering and takes 4 hours to complete(if you even eventually do complete it) by 99% of the players, don't expect many people to play it.
I loved my little Chua character, adorable evil little furry pot bellied skunk rat, and the design of Wildstar reminded me so much of toony games like "Ratchet and Clank" and "Jak and Daxter"... And you are exactly right, a game style like that should not be aimed at hardcore players, and especially not a PvP crowd.
I've noticed so many Solo, Co-Op and PvE games tack on some PvP aspect just to waste time and money on something the hyper competitive gamers are going to be done with right away, and move on, when there are dedicated PvP games out there already... But, because of that hyper competitiveness, the PvP'ers are more likely to spend real money or grind out repetitive levels for bragging rights.
Meanwhile I found myself Roleplaying and grinding for house stuff more in wildstar than doing any sort of battles or PvE stuff after reaching max level as no one wanted to take on a newbie to their super-serious PvE raids.
They could have made an entire game with just the Chuas, I'll have to hop on and take some screen shots before it is shuttered.
Not much that can be done other than sign a petition begging the rights owner to release a private server version of the game, though not many companies ever do that.
I'm really going to miss the brightly colored cartoonish style of Wildstar.
How I can help? I'd filled a form in Twitter for the revival, and we'll participate in the Retromissile groupal last picture.
Thanks for caring about this
plus i wasn't in a guild if i remember, so i wasn't gonna be able to do raiding anyway.
Sad to hear it's coming to an end. I hope you can succeed in keeping it alive.
