Life Update
I was getting caught up on my Notifications and realized I haven't posted a journal in a while.
Things have been going well. My job has been a bit overwhelming for the last few weeks. The person who covers the front desk for one of our offices quit with only a few days notice so they asked me to go up to that office, learn the specific tasks she did, and basically cover until a replacement is hired.
Upside: I've been able to streamline some of the tasks she did, so what took her hours takes me minutes.
Downside: I have to get up two hours earlier than normal to drive to this location and open up. I'm a night owl, this schedule is driving me mad and draining me.
For those who don't know, I'm on Staff for
pinefurcon, mostly in Registration and the Game Room. I had a lot of fun volunteering this year and am glad to provide more support going forward.
I also agreed to be on Staff for Anthrocon. It took me long enough to get off my lazy butt and help. :-D

Understandable. Everyone has different levels of availability.
Hope you are able to make PFC next year. We need more people who were alive in the 70s to represent Old School Cool.
It's not looking good for me. I'm on the board of directors of the Matthews Museum of Maine Heritage located at the Union Fairgrounds. The weekend after PFC, The Union Fair Association is hosting the annual Northeastern International Agricultural Fair and Exposition (Canadian term for a fair) Conference at the Samoset Resort. On that Saturday, attendees will be wandering around the Union Fairgrounds where the museum is located. We need to unmothball the museum the week before, bring in heaters and man it for the event, regardless of how much snow might still be on the ground.
So PFC weekend, I'll probably have to be at the museum prepping it for visitors.
I am doomed to be a nice, helpful wolf.
I have learned from AC of the importance to take time off and attend panels and spend time with friends (such as yourself).
And also to not frickin sit near the registration tables right outside the Dealer's Den radiating an "Info Desk" aura.
Some people just have that "feeling" - I do, too, I suspect, given how often I have to tell people I don't work somewhere (and we're not even talking about a "wearing red in Target" situation here).
I'd love that, and it being socially acceptable to somehow "flag" what level of social interactivity you are currently up for (https://autisticadvocacy.org/wp-con.....tionBadges.pdf ) would probably make social spaces generally much more pleasant for... honestly, most people, autistic or not. @_@
It doesn't help to have a system if the average person doesn't know what it means.
And you're always welcome to chat with me on Telegram.
I am blaming you and saying that you referred me.
I was interested in going this year but I tend to get bored at cons if I am not doing something (that is why I only ever go one day at portcon) and figured it was a long way to go for a single day.
If I get on staff I will have to come down and hang out beforehand. Should do that anyway honestly.
Next semester I will have weekends off work, so that frees me up to attend the Mainefur meets.
We can always use more help and especially someone with your experience.
I don't mind if you blame me. For every person I recommend as Staff, I get a $10 voucher for the PunJar.
Fyrdawg and Gesten are both on Security if you need non-screwball references.
Funny enough, being bored is how I ended up volunteering and then ending up on Staff.
Great to hear about your schedule. There's a Gizmo-sized hole in our bowling meets that you'd be a good fit perfectly.
I doubt working security will be any more difficult than working lead at the Anthrocon Art show or for Logistics/VIP Relations at Bronycon. Just different. It seems like no matter the position, working con staff is just a matter of knowing what the rules are, how/when they are enforced, and when to back off and call in someone else if it gets beyond you.
If I get on staff I might come down a day or so early to help set-up, hang out, and maybe get a rundown on what the 'plan' is for working the con. We will see.
Last time I went bowling was during one of the meets in Bangor... Last year?... that sounds right.
The new schedule doesn't start till the end of January, so I will have to see what meets are starting around then.
Yeah, I'm sure Security is a pretty straightforward gig. Shame we couldn't snag you for Registration. Might drop a word in Spangler (Mal/Cougarpaws)'s ear to pull some strings. :-D
And thanks, any help you can provide for setting up would be appreciated.
The next Furbowl is in Bangor on Jan 12th, and we're looking to have a swim meet in Jan/Feb in South Portland.
I think I would be better suited to help with security since I am rather detail oriented and safety conscious (make sure fire lanes are clear, rooms aren't over capacity, etc...) but I also put in for "Panels/Events" and a write in position of "Logistics".
Might be able to make Jan 12th. Will have to see what my schedule is.
Haven't spoken to Mal in quite a while (could say the same about a LOT of furs). How is she doing? Still working on the EMT thing?
We also have a pool party meet at the SoPo Rec Center on 2/9.
I think Mal's doing okay. I honestly don't know what she's doing for work these days. :-P
