I agree with others. It’s never too early as long as you get them done before the holiday.

I think it's fine to start with Christmas things now, here in Sweden it gets to 1th November and everything is suddenly covered with christmas lights, lol.

Like many already mentioned: To start now would allow ya to finish it before Christmas!
It gives you plenty of time to finish the commission, especially if there would happen to be delayed responses on WIPS, this also would save time to finish it.
So starting now would be completely fine, a lot of people wanna get gifts for their buddies too as I can imagine, and getting them before Christmas (and not after) would be a big bonus
