It's always so easy to forget how every country celebrates different holidays at different times. I know I really was totally unaware of each country's special days. I think, to be truthful, I first became aware of a regular UK one through "Neopets". Boxing Day I believe it is.
I think Canada has a Thanksgiving, too. However it is at a different time than the USA one.
I also believe the UK has a few other exciting holidays, too. I think, also thanks to Neopets, there is St. David's day...? *Looks bashful as he is uncertain*
In any case, I'm thankful to be pals with a great squiggle like you. :)
I believe Canada has Thanksgiving in October. So a lil more spaced out on big eat holidays than here in the states. I mean think about it. We have 3 food heavy Holidays in a row. Halloween, time to eat lots of candy! Thanksgiving, big BIG mean probably with turkey and relatives. Christmas. Big Meal plush gifts more candy and again with relatives. ^^
Boxing Day is celebrated throughout the British Commonwealth, I believe. Mostly it just involves a day off, but in olden times would involve boxing up gifts for servants and/or charitable donations.
We Canadians celebrate our Thanksgiving on the 2nd Monday of October (Columbus Day and/or Indigenous People's Day in the USA). We also, for some reason, celebrate Queen Victoria's birthday (1st Monday prior to May 25) which apparently is NOT done elsewhere...
St. David/Dafydd's Day (March 1) is a celebration of Wales' patron saint and isn't a statutory holiday, but does involve lots of singing and some yummy-sounding leek broth! Incidentally, our Scottish Furiends have St. Andrew's Day coming up next week (November 30, also not statutory) and Bobby Burns Day on (January 25).
I only learned a couple of years ago that Boxing Day isn't a worldwide kind of thing. It surprised me!
We do have the patron saints' days - St David for Wales, St Andrew for Scotland, St George for England, St Patrick for Ireland (and that's a special day for someone else too!) - but they're not really special events, we still have to go to work and everything.
The best special day that's unique to the UK is Bonfire Night on November 5th, with all the fireworks! Wheeeee!
And I'm very thankful that I'm friends with such a wonderful Yoshi-ducky! *cuddles* Thank you, Yosh! ^.^
Ah! Bonfire day! That was noted on Neopets, too! What a fun sounding holiday. (Neopets had virtual greeting cards based on the occasion and what they illustrated looked very fun)
Oh! There is a UK writer on FiM Fiction who introduced me to a dessert called 'Tablet'. He was kind enough to explain it but I definitely love enjoying what makes the other side of the pond a fun place.
If I ever get that way I'd love to meet you. It's been over 10 years now. :)
