The Writings of Tyranous, Part 4
"I found something fascinating among the writings and journals. Through the centuries, this being seemed to try to be part of events, part of the culture. He genuinely seemed to try to fit in with the world around him and live with it, through the endeavors of 'mortals' and yet he never tried to use his apparent power and eternal life to rule over them. He didn't want undue notice, just to...well, live. There is a hunger for life in these writings, and despite the centuries and millenia separating these journals according to our best dating methods, they are undoubtedly from the same hand, the same handwriting habits, and the same mind.
I am also in contact with someone who claims to have journals from this century from this being...one of which is only a few years old. He is still among us seemingly, just watching and interacting as he can. I will have more on this as I am able, but if he is truly still here, we must make priority of finding him, his knowledge could without doubt change the course of our understanding of history, and possibly our futures. The idea both excites and terrifies me. I still am not sure I believe in angels and demons, heaven and hell...but this being is the closest thing to a god we have ever found definitive evidence about. We can't let this slip through our fingers.

I can't understand these mortals at times.
I thought with the Angelic host leaving me in peace, and the few assassins sent by the Burning Hells dispatched with ease, that I might find some manner of peace. I watched them form tribes and the rise and fall of civilizations. The Egyptians were among the most fascinating. Felixious took particular interest in them, and there were actual deific beings watching these mortals. Ra and Set were interesting, they were not demonic or angelic, but living gods born of this reality, anomalies in a strange and wonderful universe beyond the true understanding of mortals. There were others, but Felixious interacted with them more than I did. I enjoyed the company of Set from time to time, but I chose to leave and see more of the world. I found other civilizations and cultures scattered around the globe, and I would stay among them for a time, shifting my appearance to blend in, a trick Set helped me refine.
Centuries passed in this manner, I would return to find my love, she remained with the Egyptians until their civilization began to collapse, a mix of internal conflict and disease spreading through their main settlements. It was a shame to see them fall, but it was simply the cycle of mortality for so very long. Time continued on and we continued moving among them, watching them discover more and more of their own world, wage wars, enjoy peace, and generally be...mortal. It took a lot for me to deny my greedy demonic nature to try to manipulate them, make them serve. It was not my place to do so, and it would bring too much attention to me from both sides of the eternal conflict raging just beyond the borders of this reality.
I did find I was not alone, many others had escaped to this realm for the same solitude I had. We would sense one another when we drew into close proximity, and generally after hesitant posturing we would speak, trade stories, and go about our own business. Then, the mortals did something unexpected....they discovered me.
Ancient Britannia was the first time I'd been unmasked for what I was, and it caught me off guard entirely. They had divine assistance, an archangel with a grudge to settle against me had helped provide them with my identity, I learned later. But they came and burned my home as I slept, I emerged from the flames in a fit of confused anger, priests and armored knights calling out the 'abomination against God' and then...the head priest grinned, and I felt the familiar tingle up my spine. An angel...a powerful one. He called me by name, and I lunged for him. He drew out a shining blade and the mortals surrounded us, but were not ready to risk their own lives yet, not when their leader seemed prepared to fight.
My disguise was lost the moment I touched that angelic blade, the illusion scattered to the winds as my full form as a hellhound was revealed to the mortals, molten fire pulsing through my veins as my markings glowed crimson against the shadow black of my body. Claws met sword again and again, and I could find no flaw in his defense...and then my beloved struck from behind him, an arrow blooming from his shoulder, his defense wavering in surprise, and then my claws found his arm and ripped it open. Brilliant light poured from the wound, the angel unable to hold his own disguise now that I had struck him, and he discarded it and rose above the battlefield. The mortals seemed to lose their resolve now, backing away as the otherworldly fight continued before them, eyes wide in a mix of awe and fear.
I won the fight, but not without cost. A mistake cost me a serious wound to my right shoulder, my front right leg becoming all but useless as I lunged forward and snapped the archangel's neck with my fangs, his form shuddering and dispersing in a keening explosion of sound and light. There were long, silent moments then, the mortals realizing the demon had just won...but was also wounded. They came charging in, and I had no desire to annihilate them, they were no threat to me...but I was blind with anger, and I slaughtered them until Felixious tackled me and allowed the last two to escape as she dragged me away into the wilderness.
It took me centuries to recover from that wound, it still stings in the presence of angels to this day. The heavens lost a mighty warrior that day, and though they condemned his actions as those of a sole fanatic, they openly resent me for killing him. When I recovered, I found mortals had advanced significantly...they had what they'd called technology, but far more advanced than anything I'd seen. Self-powered vehicles without beasts pulling them, metal behemoths flying through the sky, instant communication across the globe. It was magnificent to see what they had achieved, things the heavens and hells could never even conceive of...so uniquely mortal.
They'd also gotten to this point through atrocities and wars beyond description, and I was going to find myself at the heart of history as war broke out across the world, everyone dividing between two sides as armies positioned and prepared to clash once again. I would learn later this was the second such war, and I had missed the first such "World War" near the end of my isolated recovery...
