Tumblr was told by Apple that they couldn't be on the App Store because of the rampant child porn on it.
So they tried to make a bot that detected CP, and that was what happened a while back with Tumblr accounts.
Since hired a staff and implemented a robust report system takes money....
They instead said "NUKE IT ALL!"

*Rampant* child porn? lol I doubt that. I'd just hear stories of the occasional blog had one or two instances before being reported and taken down. But I never got the impression it was a big enough problem to invoke scorched earth/hammerdown protocol currently running. Jesus.

I feel like it was just a "won't someone please think of the children?!" move that was made to simplify everything as opposed to going through the trouble of actually thinking of a solution.
