[Blender Users] Help with making facial shape kays
7 years ago
[This journal is for Blender 3D users only.]
Okay, so I have been planning on how I should create the armature for Charlotte. Sadly I decided to go and make shape keys for the facial rig. Seeing that the pitchipoy rig didn't work so well and that I might get a better grip with shape keys instead.
The downside to that however is that I don't know how much keys I need in order to get a good facial rig. I am aware of the vowel keys for the mouth such as A, E, I, O and U. As well as every other vowel and opening and closing eyelid keys. It's just that I need help with getting all of them setup properly.
And now, this isn't me asking for someone to do it for me. I do not swing like that and I never will do such things. Besides it's best that one does things themself so that they get the desired results.
Anyways, I think that it's best that I leave a few questions in case anyone comes across this.
1. How many shape keys do I need to make for the facial rig? (How many keys for the mouth, eyelids, ears, etc.)
2. Is it possible to blend two shape keys for a better result?
3. What would be a good way to make shape keys for the eyelids so that they don't clip through the eyes?

I'm sort of in the same boat with trying to work out shape keys for face animation. One thing I can say is blending shape keys can work, but animating them if they are not in sync can make the blend weird. As for eyes, I've found that making an eye half closed to 100% and then making a separate shape key that in combination with the half closed makes it fully closed. Animating it as a sort of shell system (one goes to 100% then the other key starts to finish the blink) for eye movement, it's easiest to set up the movement to a bone, and make it pole to another eye control bone.
