One thing that helps me overcome that sort of dead end is to get curious about the other person. Everyone has a unique set of experiences and perspectives, so I like to figure out what I can learn about and from them. What do they do for work? What’s it like where they live? What do they know that I don’t? I had a thought the other day, does my conclusion make sense? Maybe they’ll disagree with me about something. Why? Maybe we like the same sort of subject. Do we like it for the same reasons?
That’s my go to strategy and it works pretty well. It’s much easier if the other person brings something to the table too, but you can keep a conversation afloat indefinitely by asking open-ended questions.
