The Furry Fix for Divisiveness: BLOCKLISTS
6 years ago
Our latest article, trending again on Bleeding Fool. This one covers the truth behind the "Altfurry Blocklist."
Victim testimonials are hands-down the best part of the piece, some of them floored me:

I couldn't cover everyone- if you know of a person wrongfully targeted by this list, mention them in the article's comment section.

This kind of shit really shouldn't be in the fandom..
the whole people having problems with each other thing doesn't interest me.
neither does big effing deals about anything.
i don't know about you, but i don't live in a universe that was created to be a backdrop for human society.
we do live on a planet we can screw up and screw ourselves by doing so,
but to the rest of the universe, it is just another grain of sand.
imagination interests me. little people sized trains, quirky little houses, and forested mountains that go on forever.
but all this other crap, vengence begets vengence and there is no honor in any of it.
So for those who are still questioning the truth of all this, yes, this blocklist is an immense farce with absolutely NO objective point of view - typical of actual internet kids who never learnt what it means to think and check facts before typing, and/or are seeking immediate fame with whatever subject they will find, the most shocking being the better.
It's very ironical that authoritarian powers (like nazism) began exactly with this kind of ideas and people.
Yes, I hate social media. Why? I have a User Page for that: http://www.furaffinity.net/user/perfesser-bear/
Second, this write up makes three general charges against the block list, its operator(s), and its users: That it is a poorly constructed list that includes people who should not be on the list, that the appeals process is in some fashion unfair, and that the operator(s) and some fraction of the users are terrible people for various reasons. To a certain degree all of these items have interlinked elements of self-fullfilling prophecy, a lot of the twitter evidence involves blacked out user names making verification of the presented evidence difficult, and miss the fact that one does not need to an actual nazi to be kind of a crappy person that might cause enough trouble to get on a block list or who may want to use a block list because they don't like somebody or a bunch of somebodys. But I feel compelled to point out a couple specific items in all this tangle. First up, if the view is that the operator(s) of the list are just that terrible, as are some or even most of the list's users are just that awful of people (either for explicit instances of bad behavior or because they used a block list at all), then why would you want to interact with them? If that's not the case, then why must they be required to interact with you, when they may feel that you are not someone they should be compelled to interact with? Again, there's a freedom of association thing here that's kind of being glossed over. But I digress. There is apparent in all this a misunderstanding perhaps of the why of people being added to the list. Yes, some of it is black box, because as a privately operated list that is their prerogative. But over time I've noticed several attempts to either make assumptions about that standard or to suggest that there simply isn't one that's consistent or sensible (like as presented in the linked item). Doxi cites the phrase āThis machine blocks fascistsā. But does the block list only block fascists? Perhaps the block list blocks alt-right adjacent people. Perhaps it blocks people who have engaged in harassment of others. And sure, perhaps it blocks people who annoyed the original list creator at some point and thus got blocked. Those that use it however have come to trust the maintainer(s) enough to trust their judgement. And if the general goal of the list is to increase quality of life of the users and to reduce harassment, then as long as it is doing that, then is that not good enough as far as meeting its goals? An imperfect tool to save people time and stress on their mental health, and to, you know, cut down on the harassment campaigns, seems better than no tool.
Third, in all of this there is being lost a super obvious solution to all the snipping. Assuming one is okay with the general concept of a block list at least. (And you have not established a clear position on that in this writeup.) If you don't like how this list is maintained, who maintains it, or anything else about this list, there is something you can do right now: make your own block list. Be up front and clear about what its for, how people get on the list, who maintains it, what the appeals process is, ect ect. Basically all the things you have derided here, make a list where they are not issues. And make it the direct competition to the alt-furry block list. If you want it to only block actual nazis, there you go. Make that the mission statement. Just make sure you spell out what criteria you use to determine who is and is not a nazi, so your alternative block list is not similarly dinged for being too vague, and so you don't add anyone who is merely a white nationalist, but who doesn't self identify as a nazi. Don't want your list to take into consideration off twitter activities? Then spell that out as well, so people know that the guy posting all the anti-semetic memes on reddit might not get caught by your list if he keeps his twitter clean of that garbage. You can even make the appeals process to be removed from the block list super straightforward. After all, if someone comes to you and says they did nothing wrong and they are simply a centrist without a hateful bone in their body, and all those white power memes were posted ironically and those constant comments about a women's place being in the kitchen are just him having fun and not a sign of a deeper want to control women as property, then why not remove them from the list. See, you have the power to create a tool to compete with the AFB. You can even advertise all over and get tons of people signing up for it super quick. I'm sure of it. After all, if you got all the answers to why the AFB is just the worst, why not come up with an actual better solution for the needs of the people who feel safer using such a tool? This is your chance to supplant your enemies at the center of the defense of the downtrodden. And I'm sure, given that's kind of what what you wrote up is trying to do I guess, that seems like something you'd want to do.
I found out about this whole absurdity by TRYING to follow a fairly talented artist. and found I was prematurely blocked.
So I don't get the chance to ask HOW I could have possibly offended.
This is insanity.
What if the criminals of the antifanazi hate group (their behavior is a DIRECT copy of the nazis.) decide to come after me in real life?
Does this silly "tool" dox people?
They are an OBVIOUS terrorist group.
If these idiots block themselves of from communications, then how will we ever reach consensus and peace.
Now you know why people don't want to talk to you. Hope that helps!
pull your head out and reread that.
1) the antifanazis ARE ACTING like regular nazis
2) nothing spurious about the possibility of doxxing. which would put people in danger from the terrorist group of antifanazis.
3) I was PREEMPTIVELY blocked. you obviously don't read you moron.
4) ANY one who doesn't listen to REASONABLE LOGICAL convo is NOT human. PERIOD.
5) I'm OBVIOUSLY a good guy and you are quite clearly an enemy of humanity so nothing I say is "nonsense".
2. You have no idea how a block list works, do you?
3. Maybe someone who knows you realized you were insufferable and insisted on comparing everyone you didn't like to nazis? Did you think of that?
4. Interesting. Of course if you were making much of a point at all using that logic you like, you might have a point.
5. You have assumed you are a good guy. Which is safe psychologically to prevent the death of one's self esteem. But I'm going to need a bit more proof that you're not a random internet crazy person who comments on a person's comment almost a year after they comment. I mean, it sounds a bit wacky and makes me doubt your stability and good intentions. But I might be wrong, and this horrible first impression is indeed disconnected from the reality of you. But... I don't got any evidence of this so far that you're more than this terrible first impression. So what am I supposed to do?
grow up.
Again, this kind of stuff might be why people don't want to talk to you or interact with you in any way. I hope you take this in and learn that your reflexive hostility really turns people off.
Go pull your head outta your ass and do some research and educate yourself then when you've gained some logic and honesty then you can talk to me.
Like dude, I'm super having fun with this, but I have no clue what you're trying to get out of this at this point.
I mean, you keep replying and I keep snarking. Like, is everything okay at home?
if you can...
lemme know if you ever do...
meh...
As I've told students before, show your work to prove your case, don't just claim an answer is the correct answer.
I've already showed my work. if YOU can't accept proof...
...
Oh wait you're being serious. You actually think anything you've said has involved presenting a collection of actual evidence interlaced with an argument in support of some point. And isn't just you claiming stuff is true and then getting angry when I call you out on it.
Me? I'm just gonna play over here while the rest of you burn the world down. >_> ... <_< ... Try not to burn down my sand castle. Please? @_@ It will look all melty and gross and no one likes glass on a beach!
You're probably accepting evil nazi blood money and don't even know it.
