What I mean is like when you're at Disneyland, you want to do explore. See this, hang out there. Have fun here and rest over there. But instead of that, you just pass by in a train watching out the window.
That's an effective metaphor for pretty much all video game adaptations.
Movies by their very nature are the absolute last thing any video game should ever be: 100% linear. So it was inevitable that Detective Pikachu would not be able to capture the true spirit of the license and/or genre.
Ironically, the two ways in which they would best be able to recapture the spirit of Pokemon would be:
#1: Make it a video game.
#2: Make it a theme park.
It's a hollywood movie what did you expect? Actors are bad because they weren't chosen for their acting ability merely their sex and race(yes, this is true). The director was probably the worse choice possible, though their movies were "successful" people hated them and what you're explaining though is a symptom of having too many writers, Detective Pikachu had 7. All had their ideas for the movie and they tried to shove them in there.
I really hope the next one isn't a direct sequel, the ending with ryan makes it weird and uncomfortable when you look back at his character.

I recall hearing someone say that that's the ultimate issue with video game adaptations; control is not with the person who played the game.
Maybe future Pokémon movies will allow for more.
