D-Day Begins, 75 Years ago
75 years ago today, Allied forces invaded Nazi controlled Normandy with Operation Overlord. Thousands of American, British and Canadian forces landed on the beaches and behind enemy lines to free oppressed France with Omaha , Utah, Sword ,Gold and Juno Beaches. While The war in the Pacific was already raging for 3 years The European war was just beginning.....
Bot of my grandparents were in the US military at this time and while one was forced to be sent home due to an infection after getting a tooth pulled and never saw combat the other I believe was an MP and I am not aware if he saw actual combat or not, or even if he was sent over seas

Basically MP means Military Police..... I'm guessing
I heard Omaha Beach was the worse of the landings.......... I mean their was this old Veteran in Avengers: Age of Ultron (played by Stan Lee) who scoffed at Thor on Omaha Beach was Hell
Their was some doubt within the Allied High Command that this plan might not work and to compound it further....... the English Channel was known for its rough currents and waters (for centuries) and the day before D-Day they were gonna launch but it was raining with heavy winds and before D-Day happened their was constant miss direction and miss information to make Nazi Germany believe they were gonna land someplace else but thankfully they've made the right call on holding the invasion until the rainy storm passed on.........
Its strange to think how much doubt their was in the Allied High Command........ thankfully their were very intelligent people in their
Anyways......... its good to know your family has play some part in WW2
Are you into History because of your two grandfathers being in WW2? or just reading up on your families history?
Speaking of Family Legacy in the military.... my Grandfather was in the Air Force (during and after WW2 it was called the Air Corp.) he was a test pilot and trained British pilots in flying the Harrier Jump Jet (because those darn Brits keep crashing them X'D )
He even told me of the many different experimental planes, what their intended purpose was and their ultimate failures while I was playing with my MicroMachine toys (these were toys that were were small vehicles, from planes to trains and cars from the mid 80's to the late 90's)
WW2 was definitely a global war, not just in the Earopean Front (Theater as the Military calls them) but also the Pacific Front and the African Front and in all honesty you can't talk about WW2 without talking about WW1..... I mean their both have some connection in terms of the Geo-Political changes, the Axis Powers were punished (with a heavy doubt on their hands imposed by the Allies) and left Germany with a bitter defeat that allowed Hitler to take over easily by manipulating the peoples perception in Germany........
I mean honestly........ WW2 could have been avoided so easily but that's just my crazy opinion :P
Stalingrad is considered the most bloodiest battle in WW2 with 800,000 dead, the siege of Stalingrad lasted from 23 August 1942 – 2 February 1943 and Leningrad had the longest Siege time in modern history nearly 900 days (September 8, 1941–January 27, 1944)
Its hard to believe that the Nazi War Machine that once made their enemies be feared can be undone by simple bad decision's and military blunders in the highest level.......
But that's my crazy opinion
