Now that Kaiju is out, I feel like I'm in a position to start making a few moves to chase my dream of doing music full time.
I've got a few things I'm going to be working towards:
Some EPs: This is probably the most immediate thing on my end, I've been wanting to do some more of those smaller albums with a theme like I did when I started posting to Bandcamp. Of course this doesn't mean I won't be doing big full albums anymore, think of these more like side projects I pick away at while doing my main album.
Promotion: Not going to lie, despite a degree in broadcasting, I'm pretty bad at getting my name out there.
Right now I've got an ad out for this month on FA, but I'm going to be making an effort to get a little better known. Ideally, I'd love to do collaborations and such, everyone wins in that scenario, but I have to work with what I've got being an overnight worker.
Spotify: Literally just waiting for their service for artists to become available, then I'm there. I can get on there via third parties like CDBaby right now if I wanted to, but the monetary investment is something I can't make at the moment, despite all the extra services they provide.
Youtube: Technically, I already have this channel set up and ready to go with no content on it. I've had this idea of starting a channel for my experiments and oddball stuff that's too much for a twitter post, but not worth creating a full track out of.
I have a kind of plan for it, as far as structure and all that are concerned, although my camera is super low budget. I want to embrace the self-taught nature of the stuff I do, do lots of stuff experimenting with new concepts and unconventional nonsense with my instruments.
Streaming: I do have my stuff set up for Twitch, and have done a few streams to see if there's any interest. If you guys are interested in watching me work, I can always bring this back on a whim.
The only challenge that has kept me from doing it has been the ass kicking work hits me with, I'll probably need to schedule things in a way where I can get a nap in after work, then stream in the late morning.
Patreon: This is something I want to do down the line a bit, once I establish a decent listenership. Tied in with the YouTube stuff, I'm going to need to figure out what kind of stuff beyond my albums to make a subscription worthwhile. I have some ideas, but if you guys have suggestions, PLEASE hit me up in the comments.
If things work out, Patreon seems like one of the best ways to secure the means to make music a full time deal for me, and let me drown you guys in as much cool stuff as I can in the process :3
The Dream™, Full-time Musician: This is the big one, I doubt it's something I can achieve in any short period of time, but it's the big goal for me.
I think my goal is something like $1000/month (which as big as that sounds, is really 120ish album sales a month), I figure if I have all my levers pulled, Patreon subs, album sales, and YouTube ad revenue (as paltry as that can be) can make this a reality.
It'll take a ton of work to pull off, but I'm hellbent on doing what I love as a career instead of killing myself in overnight retail to get by.
