What is Shin Megami Tensei?
Konichiwa everyone! I do not know why I had such an idea, but still I met people who played Persona 5 or other parts of this series, but do not know about the main line of Shin Megami Tensei games. Therefore, I decided today to tell where Persona came from and why this series of games is in my opinion the best jrpg.
Shin Megami Tensei ( AKA Megaten or SMT) was developed by Atlus, and his main artist was Kazuma Kaneko. It all started in the Aya Nisitani trilogy in 1986 with Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei (Goddess Reincarnation). It was there that demons were described as digital creatures. It was for this book that the game on Famicom with the same name appeared. This was followed by the main line. So take a look at this drawing of this person: https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net.....20101119233025
What do you see? The first thing that occurred to you was this question. "What the hell is this?" But this is not the only demon. Look at this: https://static.giantbomb.com/upload.....426-arioch.jpg
And this: https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net.....20190402180809 (This is the Roman goddess Diana)
In general, the demon that I showed you earlier is Mara, the demon seducer in Buddhism.
But you do not think that all the demons in this series of games are terrible and vulgar. No, there are cute ones like this: https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net.....20090115114413 (Jack Frost)
Or cool like this: https://static.giantbomb.com/upload.....beelzebubb.png (Beelzebub)
I believe that the SMT has a rather good and extensive list of demons, Or Persons. I'm glad that this man touched all the tales (Like Alice from Julis Carol’s fairy tale "Alice in Wonderland" https://static.giantbomb.com/upload.....233-alice.zhpg ), mythology (like Lucifer from Christianity https://vignette.wikia .nocookie.net/megamitensei/images/a/ae/Smthelel.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/2000?cb=20170213115441 ), and stories (like Tyra no Masacado https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net.....20080807192258 )
And you know when the SMT was released? In 1987! And when Pokemon? In 1996! So it is logical to assume that the SMT has become the forefather of jrpg, and Pokemon is his heir. Also thanks to him, Undertale appeared... Oops, I forgot that some friends are triggered by this game. FORGET IT! Anyway, gameplay. Yes, there have been different experiments. For example: The Raido Kuzunoha series has found elements of action. But the idea remained the same as in all games: communication with creatures and their crossing, creating more powerful demons.
Plot. He is very interesting and rich. The problem with Pokemon is that there is a story with a little childish and bonale. That some organization for catching pokemon want to catch some legendary pokemon, but the protagonist destroys the plans of the villainous leader and catches the legend himself. (maybe I’m wrong about something)
And in the SMT series the plot can be much deeper and more interesting. Story twists, atmosphere, etc. But philosophy remains the same - the choice between good and evil, order or chaos. A big role in this was played by the Strange Journey and SMT4 games. I advise you to play them, they are great.
Although in the pokemon there is one big plus. It has a lot of furry. As a fan of the fury, I approve of her and therefore sympathy towards her. But SMT also does not remain for me the usual series of games.
I think you understand my point, and now you know where Persona 5 came from.
