I personally think going with commissions you like works best. For the double reason that you are more invested into the picture and it's not just the OH GOD I HAVE TO BE ONLINE JUST WHEN THEY COME AVAILABLE, rush of people having posts saying -I WANT ONE- that happens for first come first serve.

Also, if you are only wanting to take so many, but you get more ideas that you think would be cool, you can retrospectively contact the extra people and say you'd be into doing their pic at a later time if they don't end up getting someone else to do it. Potential for having commission/business leads prior to making big posts and asking for interest.

Just a few thoughts! :)

i like the idea of choosing my favorite idea out of a handful of requests, but i fear that may lead to some people upset. But im not sure, guess I could try it once. thanks

all situations can potentially lead to people upset. If it's first come first serve, it plays to people who can, for whatever reason, check FA journal posts regularly. Those that have to go out there n' do things away from the internet can potentially be upset for missing the opportunity too! ;) The horrors of commissioners! Run artist, run for your life!

I don't know... I for myself take up no commisssions because i draw to bad ^^. So i can't tell you how to do it.
But i think you should do it in the order they come in or "first come first". Further i think it should be no matter
if you like the ideas or not, if it is a commission you don't have to like it -otherwise you would have drawn it already
So as long as the idea is not against some personal rules or something i would draw it.
Anyway, who am i to talk about this? i will never do a commission =P

i understand work is work, but i dont see why as an artist i can't choose which work i get.. if i were desperate and only had one person wanting a commission from me, id do it no matter what, but if i have a choice ill probably do better with one i like. thanks for your input, i appreciate it

Of course it's ok to choose in which order you want to do them, if you have many commissions and some are relative easy it's the best to do them first. :)

It would be better if you choose what interests you the most. If you're more interested the more involved you get. The more involved you get the better the results and the happier the customer is. I myself am always providing multiple ideas until one pops up that the artist actually has an interest in. If an Artist is happy drawing it also means less likely the chances of him needing a break between them.

Hearing an artist go "I don't care. I'll draw what you want" kills almost everything about getting the initial commissions. I like to form a link at least that allows for some form of interest or personal freedom the artist can use.

"I want this pose, this Shape the angle should be like this"

In the end, a Commission should be a collaboration of the ideas of both parties. So I say choose what interests you.

Oh and as for the whole hurting people's feelings, Put up a big disclaimer at the start of your commission information that you mean no harm etc and you may not say yes to every idea so please do not take offence.

Y'know so then the ones that do start drama are kicked back cuz you did warn them thoroughly.

i think you should draw things the way you want to draw them as if to say if you like one idea more then another or if someone really wants to get a commission for you they should get the thumbs up over someone who just would like a commission for you, im sure they will get a chance someday to get one. not sure if i made any sence there but thats my 2 cents anyhow

well I think you should do what ever you think is best because YOU are the one who has to deal with the commission.. and if your not comfortable with it, It could cause problems with intrest and wanting to draw it in the first place.

Perhaps you could use the random list generator and let that choose your commissioners.

Post a journal that says somthing allong the lines of "Im opening commissions this journal will stay open a few days, if you would like one please mention you would like one in the comments below"

then after the few days have passed enter everyone who said they would like a commission into that random number generator, and Randomize the names, and YOu can take the first 3 (or how ever many you wanna take from the top of the list) on the list that way everyone has been given enough time to comment and it is randomized fairly that you would have no guilt on who to take commissions from, This is the method I use when Im giving away stuff.

Just make sure you figure out prices and stuff
