you have to still have the disc in and start it normally. it will read the disc long enough to confirm that you own the game after that, it will start reading the disc and play from the hard drive. P.S. installing games can take up lots of hard drive space.
Since the Xbox 360 can install games to the hard drive as well, I can honestly say I've never done such and doubt that I will. For one, it takes up a lot of hard drive space, and I rely on it when I play the Arcade trials to see if I like them or not.
I just backed up everything to a fat32 harddrive in an external case, 120 gig drive.
I then got a 320 gig Sata Laptop drive, installed it, then installed the back up. It was 109 bucks, but worth it. Just have to get a program that can format a harddrive to fat32. It's worth it.
As for installing the game, I use the disk to boot and it keeps the game from were and tear on the game.
