How do you take a tripod with you on an airline?
I'm flying tomorrow and might have need of my tripod. But my tripod is about 4-5 feet tall when collapsed, about 20 pounds. I doubt it can be taken on as carry-on. Or can it? But at the same time, the carrying case does not (by design) fully zip up, so putting it into checked luggage seems like it would simply fall out and have other sorts of problems. So how do I fly with this thing?

Typically, airlines require baggage to be less than 50 lbs, and under 62 inches on all three measurements. for carry on, it needs to clear security, and fit either in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.
I would suggest using a standard size tripod for travel. Otherwise you'd have to call the airlines and make arrangements - kind of like carrying on a musical instrument.
