Imagine a pokemon game where....

            1. You never saw yours or your opponents level or HP bar. You wouldn't know if you were overpowered or underpowered for each and every battle, wouldn't know if you or your enemy were low on health and only needed a small attack or not to save PP. Maybe like little character differences like Final Fantasy Mystic quest style to show if they're half way damaged or not to give a clue at most and looking a little bit more like actually hurt.
2. The whole map was open from the start. Nothing blocking your path (except things blocking you from battling elite 4 (or whatever it would be) and stuff like that which needs to follow rules to do. You could end up going to places with pokemon way stronger than you are or face gyms in different orders, but it meant you got to choose and find your own path through the game.
3. Not told if moves are effective or not. The pokedex and knowing what pokemon are what type and what moves are effective is all you need to work it out yourself.
4. Potions or items could not be used in battle. Berries maybe and held items are all good, but using a potion/revive/full heal and such would not be possible. Getting in the middle of a pokemon battle to use a potion is risky after all.
5. You have to eat and pokemon centers cost money. You have to buy yourself and your pokemon food to keep them healthy and if not they get weaker or start on lower health, and using a pokemon center would cost some (not much) money to help cover their costs and so you don't overuse them just to refill 1/4 of one pokemons health. Though you can also let some of your pokemon perform "jobs" within the cities to earn extra money so it's not just from battles.
6. There were more than one "rival gang/evil team"... and you could potentially join them! They might come with perks such as free pokeballs or extra EXP, or you just agree with their actions, and doing so would alter the story depending on your chosen path. Of course they'd likely lead to bad endings though....
7. Legendary pokemon were TOUGH! Rather than getting a free legendary in the middle of the game, or getting a high level post game that was barely any harder to catch, or not even that strong so wouldn't likely be used.... they would be extremely high leveled and maybe even OP! Catching them would be like trying to fight a superboss and take so much effort that if you did eventually catch it... you'd never *need* to use it as you would already be strong enough for anything in the game.
8. The game would know if you "quit out" of a battle by turning the console off. Lets not make a big deal out of it, maybe just a monetary loss and pokemon still hurt from the battle, or if you reset because couldn't catch a pokemon then you'd still have the chance to try again but lost the pokeballs used in trying.
9. Once you became champion, you would have others come to challenge you. Others would want to be the next champion after all, so you would have to challenge them to keep the title, and they would get stronger each time. Of course you'd get perks to being the champion so there's reason to try and keep it rather than let it be taken away.
............... yeah I'd hate it too

Also, maybe add an option to befriend "unique" pokemon like legendaries. Like, come on, you'd never CATCH something like Celebi, but you could easily make friends with her. You could call on their aid if you found how to bond with them, and you were in their region.
