Share your experience, or your worries in case you're keeping it to yourself.
In my case I was open about it since the first moment. But it's my specially embarrasing social situation that made it easy for me.
I'm super introverted and socially inept.
All my life I've been the worst at making and keeping good relationships, I barely have any relatives I keep contact with, I was never able to have a good breakup to at least stay friends with my exes. There's only one good friend from high school who has my back and I his and can count on each other anytime... but it's a low maintenance friendship, I had access to his bank account when we worked together for example, I might still do if he hasn't changed his pass codes, but we rarely hang out or talk to each other if there's nothing urgent.
Right now most of my friends are such because they found me as a furry artist first, and they are all long distance online relationships, so I don't even get to hang out with them if I don't travel to their country.
Since I'm absolute shit at socializing I never cared about what my friends or family would think about what I do, so I openly told them that I'm a furry artist when I became one. Some friends were curious, so I explained what it is about and let them see a little past the stigma and stereotypes, some even browsed through some of the stuff I had drawn so far, I still chat with some of them once in a blue moon. Others didn't inquire about it, which I imagine it means they don't care whatsoever or they stick to the stigma and stereotypes and just step back without wanting to know more.
My real name is linked to my artist name. I didn't care about hiding one from the other. My clients see my name in the invoice, my personal and art facebook are related to one another, I have shared some of my drawings in my personal accounts, it's not hard to find my real name with a couple of clicks on the internet, etc.
I'm sure there are rumors and stuff behind my back among some of my relatives and friends who chose to stuck with the prejudices, but I just don't really care enough to make sure everybody knows exactly what I do. If they wanna think I do horrible unspeakable things, I'm fine with it. xD
So, yeah. For me was easy. I just don't have many people around who I would worry about disappointing or being judged by.
How is it for you? Keeping it private, or have you told them you're a furry? How did it go?

My best friend, know because of Twitter. He was curious, and ask me a lot of questions, be really kind, and know that even if I in this fandom, I'm still the same he know for years, so he don't care.
An other friend that's a virtual guy like me guessed I was one when he saw the keychain with my sona on my bag at a party. He irronicaly sayed "Herk" when he saw it, and never told me again about that, and still laught with me, so he don't care too x)
Like my best friend, a lot of my friend follow me on twitter, so they certernly know i'm one, but don't know what it is.
My close family (Dad, mom, sister) know that I order a lot of art with my characters. Only at con for my father, but my mother and sister follows my 3rd instagram account recerved for posting the arts I get and follow furry account. The like the concept and think that's cool!
I tought a lot about it a few years ago and noticed that when you break it down to the basics you see that humans sexualize any and all forms of creativity. Ask em to name any form of art, and then ask if there's not a sexual version of it. We can and do make everything sexual. Furries are just the same, and maybe only more prominent because this community is more open and accepting of everyone else's opinions and differences to begin with, so expressing sexual interests along with it is more accepted too.
Couple years later I finally came out to my dad before he passed. He was.... confused to say the least and I ended up having to describe it as "I'm into the car body but not the paint job." I don't think he fully understood. He kept saying "Fluffy" instead of "Furry" it was actually kinda funny.
By relation his Girlfriend found out soon after and she was basically like my brother.
I finally told my Mother bout a year ago and she was just like "Okay.... doesn't really effect me so who am I to judge."
All my friends and hockey team mates could not give a shit if i was or wasn't, doesn't effect how they see me.
