Should I get another cat?

I've had two cats from the same litter for half my life, got them when they were two months old and both of them together would fit in one hand. Tora http://www.furaffinity.net/view/10974401/ died at 16 of kidney failure five years ago, and Bastet http://www.furaffinity.net/view/33161538/ just died at 22 a few months ago. I miss them terribly.
...but I'm old, and sick (diabetes, failing kidneys (which is what killed both of the cats and one of my parents), depression, high blood pressure, etc) and a cat may outlive me and be left alone.
I've been waffling on this for months. My roommate lost a dog and replaced it in two days, but he'd only had her for like six months. A kitten is entirely out of the question, no way would I want to outlive one that long as much as I would like to have one... I don't want to mess with fostering, because that'd be like constantly losing them.
So if I were to get one, it would be an older cat, maybe 5-6ish, or possibly a pair if they had some that wanted to stay together, and that would need to get along with the dog.
I can't decide on my own. This has been a serious shitshow of a quarter, nothing I do works right, and I don't want to make it worse...

That's more or less what I was thinking... older cats aren't as likely to ever get out of jail. And if I don't get a test drive, I'm not interested. :P The pound where my mother got her two had 'fitting rooms' where you could let them loose and play with them before taking them home. I'm going for at least that.
Roommate ended up getting three kittens when the dog was too much of an asshole to keep. Only intended to get two, but it would have left the runt alone. He is now the biggest of the three and they're all terribly spoiled. :P
The cats are fat and happy. None of them hang with me much, but they love my roommate. 'My' cat is pretty much the ex-runt Misu, Pepper always acts like I'm about to beat her unless I have treats, and apparently Bugggs has the ability to hear other cats being petted and will come zooming in for hers.
