Where's the conversation gone?
Remember when people shared art and wrote informative descriptions or journals and people engaged in the comments? Like, actual conversations? I know it still happens, but it seems to happen much less than it did 20 years ago. Where has the conversation gone? Where do people go to engage the community? I know a lot of artists I pay attention to seem more active on Twitter. Is that the main hub of conversation these days?
Thanks for responding Vinny. :3
Maybe people are just forced to cross post everywhere, and then to save time do not bother to even put a blurb. I generally do not follow people that post that way out of principle. Salty I guess but it usually is outside illustrators trolling for art mill cash.
Same with Youtube. My husband has a youtube channel, and he's lucky if he gets one comment every 3-4 videos. It seems to be a 'consume and pass through' mentality versus an 'engage' anymore.
Of course, then there's introverts like me who go "Ooh, that artwork is cool" or "Oh, they make a good point" but don't say anything for fear of sounding stupid. I've been trying to get myself to leave comments more often. Even if I feel they're inane, I tell myself "I'd want a comment like this, I should give one."
I agree about the facebook likes. I also think the sheer amount of content generated makes it harder to keep up, harder to take time to comment, harder to say anything or be heard. For that, I started really narrowing down who I follow. I also think it is cause to focus on producing quality over quantity work. If you want likes, produce gratuitous quantities of click-fodder. If you want engagement, focus on quality that compels viewer commentary.
If you wish how we engage would change, then keep doing what you can to be that change. I say this as much to myself. :3
Thanks for commenting. ;3
And thank you for making a thoughtful journal and also taking the time to reply, even if my reply back was belated haha.
Welcome to 2020!
