Review, Dragon Pilot: Hisone and Masotan
Lets start off the new year with a review of something fun I think more people need to see.
Dragon Pilot, Hisone and Masotan.
This show surprised and delighted me.
Part modern fairy tale, part military character drama and a very big part comedy.
It made me laugh a lot, though it was also very sweet and moving sometimes.
(Please note that this is a very quick basic introduction of the show for review purpose and I'm leaving out a load of details and characters.)
We are introduced to Hisone, a young socially awkward woman who has just started her career as part of the Japanese air force, better known as the "Self defense force".
She has a bit of a talent for getting herself into trouble, it seems she has no "social filters", and just says whatever comes in her head, often and unintentionally coming across as hurtful or rude.
She gets more or less tricked by her superiors into visiting mysterious hangar 8 and there she meets a gigantic terrifying creature that proceeds to swallow her whole!
It does spit her out again, miraculously unharmed, and as she recovers at the sickbay She is introduced into what is really going on at this airbase, turns out dragons are real and they work for the Japanese air force, wearing special transformable suits of armor that can completely camouflage them as planes.
Each dragon has a dedicated pilot who, wearing a special acid proof suit, sits inside the dragons stomach and steers them using a sort of augmented reality system.
It didn't try to eat her, no, it wants her to be its new pilot!
If this is all a rather wild and overwhelming concept to you, well imagine how it feels to poor Hisone.
She get reintroduced to the dragon, who's name (we will learn later) is Masotan.
Seeing him for the second time he is not at all as monstrous as he at first appeared, in fact he looks kind of goofy and adorable, even more so because of the show's very cartoony art style, though his sheer size and strength still make him pretty intimidating.
She learns that dragons are very picky as far as it comes to pilots and Masotan hasn't had a pilot for a long time, he hasn't accepted anyone, after his old pilot left him 3 years ago, he seems a little sad about it, doesn't want to fly anymore, doesn't want to do much of anything really, poor thing.
But dragons need to fly to stay healthy, their bodies overheat if they don't and his caretakers at the airbase are pretty much at the end of what they can do to keep the big fellow in hangar 8 healthy.
But now things are going to change now he has found his new pilot, and now!...
Hisone tries, she tries and trains so hard but its no use, its all too much at once, too crazy, she doesn't want anything to do with this monstrous thing that tried to eat her, she's terrified of him, much to the anger and frustration of her superiors.
She just cant help it, she messes everything up.
A few days pass and Hisone doesn't know what to do, this was not at all how she imagined her career at the air force would be.
But just as she decides to quit the air force completely, understanding comes to her... and, wearing her augmented reality pilots helmet, she visits the dragon and speaks with it.
'Why me... I'm not special... i always say the wrong things... I always end up hurting people... but being so close to you... it feels right somehow... your not a monster... your eyes are kind and gentle..."
"maybe..."
Masotan swallows her again and he goes wild, ramming himself trough the doors of his hangar, smashing into stuff, wrecking everything he touches.
He cant get into the air quick enough, and as I watch I realize its not anger or aggression that makes him do this, no...
Its joy.
He takes to the sky, soaring, roaring, gleefully barrel rolling trough the clouds. he has shaken off his sadness and he has come alive again.
Masotan, big sweet silly dragon, your so happy because you found her, the one who belongs with you, who you need to be so close to your heart she has to be inside you.
And now... now she has accepted you, now your complete again, strong again... now you can fly again!.
It was the moment the show had completely won me over, I knew it was for me.
Hisone, once again overwhelmed by everything and having a bit of a breakdown, manages to make contact with the flight control room and with their help she can activate the augmented reality helmet and begin to try to get Masotan back under control..
She's awestruck, its like the helmet makes her see trough Masotan's eyes, soaring above the clouds, its wonderful, beautiful...
Masotan sharing the joy of flight with her, is that what he was in such a hurry for?...
She managed to activate his plane disguise, moments later Masotan looks like a perfectly normal F-15, well apart from the cute little eye holes in the nosecone that is.
Finally things are getting back under control again, Hisone again awestruck by what she is seeing, there above the clouds...
They return to base.
She get reprimanded by her superiors, she was not wearing her acid protection suit and things could have ended quite lethal for her in Masotan"s stomach.
But it all paid off, the big guy is wants to fly again.
From that point on Hisone becomes more and more dedicated to her dragon, and its adorable how she treats him, always cuddling and petting him, her initial fear and disgust soon replaced by complete and utter love.
Being a dragon pilot isn't easy though and Hisone still has a lot to learn, soon 3 more dragons and their pilots move to the base too, each of them very different in their own way
Because there is a reason for all this... a big task that lies ahead of them...
The rest you need to see for yourself, I wont spoil it... give it a go, I hope you will like it as much as I did...
The whole first season is on Netflix right now, for a lot of you just a few mouse clicks away.
Its a silly show, yes, but under all the sillyness it has a heart as big as a dragon's...
Big recommendation.
