Hello everyone!
We are two weeks into 2020 and I'm still full of superficially fueled anxiety because of what the future might bring.
So I thought I'd make exactly that today's topic.
The future, that is. Not anxiety.
With ongoing advances in technology and more and more help from our good friend, the artificial intelligence, it makes you wonder just how much of an effect the concept of the technological singularity will have on our beloved art forms.
*menacingly lights face with flashlight*
How long will it take until computers start replacing composers?
The computer game "No Man's Sky" for instance makes excessive use of procedurally generated music and is only a very recent example of this concept being implemented in games.
The concept has actually been around for decades; although 25 years ago the generated music was a lot simpler, obviously.
I should mention that the music samples in the above mentioned example were still recorded by a real band (65daysofstatic) and the actual sounds are not being generated live by plug-ins or the likes.
But just imagine that one day high-end music plug-ins might actually be used in this way.
Teaching composition to a computer is by far no impossible task. In the end it's really about patterns, harmonies and the way we as humans perceive them.
Will music still be the same for us as today?
Will we be able to assign the same value to music if we know that a soundtrack was written by a machine?
What if one day you watch a movie, can't hold back the tears because of the heart-wrenching score and then you find out there's not an actual person behind it?
And the Oscar for Best Original Score goes to: C.L.A.R.I-Net, the supercomputer designed to calculate the perfect soundtrack at only a fifth of the cost of a real composer and orchestra!
While I am fairly certain we still have ways to go before this can actually become the standard, it is still a very realisitic and frightening thought.
But enough doomsday talk! Allow me to present some very human-made music to you.

The Back Page
We will be back in two weeks, hopefully with news that are a little more uplifting than today.
Until then, I'll just stay blissfully ignorant and try not to focus on the dawn of our new A.I.-Overlords too much.
