You should ALWAYS ask for an itemized bill, even if your insurance covers it. And yes, they will go crazy trying to get accurate. the bill SHOULD lower, but wiping out? Not in my experiences. ALWAYS worth a try.

In the comments, asking for charity aid and budget assistance may also help. But be prepared to provide a tax statement, wage stubs, any other assistance / income you receive, and copies of your other bills.
