You're not a terrible artist, but you do have a very cartoony style. It seems like you put too much energy into outlining bulging muscles, and you might be able to improve more if you ignored that for a while and drew from life a bit more. Also, it is true that your poses always seem a bit static.

Just out of curiosity, do you think a 'cartoony' style is somehow bad? I'm sorry if I've got that wrong, but that seemed to be the implication.

My style is cartoony, that's true, but I personally don't see anything wrong with that.

I think you do just fine, but it wouldn't hurt you to branch out a bit and try different things, if you aren't already. But that's just something all artist should do. Hell, that's something EVERYONE should do. As they are, I think your figures are sound and they don't look like what everyone else draws. All furry artists and cartoonists in general are unique and I like your Simpsons-influenced style. It's different and that's a great thing!

But I think the guy who posted that stuff was just being obnoxious. Sounds like a troll to me or someone who has no tact. Don't worry about him.

I do try to do something new now and again. I'd never consider my style 'simpson-influenced' before...

It's good art to be influenced by. Simple and a little off kilter but the shapes are still pleasing and round. They translate easily into the third dimension.

I think you draw incredibly well. And if it does well, why change the way it's drawn? Besides, that's like saying a manga artist needs to change how everything is drawn while in the middle of a manga series. That makes no sense. In fact, drawing style only needs to be changed AFTER all manga/comics are done. That way you can come out with something new without it looking like anything you've done before. So just ignore that idiot, and draw the way you like to draw.

Your style is amazing. Anyone who can't appreciate it is missing on something special. Your art is colorful, expressive,and stylized. It sounds like the guy who left such a hurtful comment was just some random malcontent.

Well, I accepted a long time ago that my style was not going to be to everyone's taste. The guy's entitled to his opinion, even if I think he's wrong.

I think it's simple: You've naturally settled into a drawing style. So have many other artists I enjoy: Gene Catlow, CatsWhisker, Stan Sakai, and so on. It's cartoony, and yet not so cartoony as to be... hmmm... grotesque. Settling into an artistic style is not a bad thing at all; in fact, it means that when someone sees it, they can say "Oh! Cyberklaw pic! Let's see what he drew this time."

I actually really enjoy your art style. it's very clean. while some of your expressions get a bit weird, (e.g. the D: face makes me laugh every time) your content, ideas, and structure of your comics more than make up for it. I feel the same way with art sometimes. you just need to takes some time to practice if you're feeling out of it.

Yeah, getting expressions right is something I still find difficult. But I'm glad you like my style regardless... :)

Well, it's alright. You do need to work on it, though, and I mean that in the best way possible.

My housemate, HikerYote does a full sketch and ink every night, and had seen remarkable improvement in his art since he started quite a few years ago. It's a laborious process but then again art isn't for the faint of heart. Also, remember when you're drawing and colouring to keep a very critical eye on what you're doing and how; and if you're still stuck try taking some courses or getting some drawing books. Learning more styles than your own is also really good it seems.

I think you've shown marked improvement since you started all that long ago on furnation. there's room for improvement, but there's not a single artist that doesn't. Every piece you do shows some improvement. Just keep working at it.

Did you read that same guy again? You did this just a few months ago, saying just about the very same things. I like your art, the watchers here like your art, the folks that buy your comic like your art. I think we all by far out weight that one person, but he is the one you listen to? Why?

This was on a different site, whether or not it was the same guy is hard to tell.

But the thing is, I am human, I'm not perfect. Sometimes letting bad comments get to me and having the occassional crisis of confidence about my art does seem to be a flaw of mine.

I fully understand you being human and letting a few bad comments get to you (lord only know I am letting one my mom said to me get me down some), but when you have a good fan base like you have, a comic that does make some money for you, and a watcher list that is growing, I say pay more attention to the folks that enjoy your work and pay little attention to the ones that don't.

I don't mean to send you into a further depression, but I would honestly say that your style isn't really changing. Looking back in your gallery, I can tell that you've definitely been slowly improving, but your style has not evolved and sometimes your characters can look a bit stiff. You're certainly not a bad artist, but it can be good to have more than one style. Even if you try some things out and don't like them at first, try it a few more times. Sometimes it can take a bit for a style to grow on you.

To be honest, I don't particularly feel the need to change my style. I know there are areas where I need improvement, but then, I never claimed to be perfect. I like my style, it suits me, and I accept it's not going to be to everyone's taste...

The problem with sticking to the same style is that people will believe that that is the only way you know how to draw. You have a lot of variety in your faces, but you reuse body-builds and poses a lot. In your comics, where you do need to vary your poses, you do so. However, someone who has only seen your pin-ups will have justifiable reason to believe that muscular guys in static poses is the full range of what you are capable of drawing.

You may only like to draw muscular-abs-guys, but if you want people to realize that you can draw other things, then you have to do so.

6 of the characters have essentially the same body, with only the Brute standing a bit out from the rest. I know that you can draw other things, because you have done so on occasions. These pictures are uncommon, though, and it is easy to forget about them.


Anyway, I'm being tangential here and should get to the point. Your skills have improved over the years. You have a style that is nice and that I, personally, like a lot. However, you could do well to vary your motifs a bit more.

I used to get like that with my Writing + SL Building though, if your not in the mod, trying to Force yourself/push it isn't a good idea [Same if you try setting yourself deadlines IMO, ends up feeling like School Homework you HAVE to do]

I agree with Mr Intialmans comment too [I'm a big Stan Sakai fan + BRB International Cartoons] So I LIKE a Cartoony style, if the bad commentor guy doesn't like YOUR Art style, Hey go watch someone else, You're getting a bunch of comics drawn, written and sold.....Whats HE done ?

I imagine this guy doesn't watch me. This comment was made on a different site about my art and I just happened to come across it.

I think it's more a case of he just doesn't like my art style, which is fine, he just expresses it in an obnoxious way...

It's not important what the rest of us think...it's important what you think.

The guy's comment is like the grain of sand in an oyster. It is an irritant. The irritant grows inside the oyster to become a beautiful pearl.

You have to ask yourself if you have improved. Look back through your work. Answer yourself truthfully.

I guess I know I have improved. There have been times when I've looked back at my earlier pics and cringed at how bad they are. But I'm still human, onnoxious comments are going to hurt sometimes...

Yeah...I cringe when I see my earlier work too!

And, yeah, being artists, we're sensitive and those types of comments hurt.

But I take the sting out of negative comments a little by thinking like this: The purpose of art is to get an emotional reaction from the members of the audience. Our egos desire that those emotional reactions are positive. But even the negative reactions are valid - they also mean that the art has fulfilled its purpose, and that therefore we have as artists as well.

Personally, I've loved your art, Cyber. And I do feel you've improved. And from what I've seen, I can't see any problems with it. You do great shading and lighting. Your characters are always wicked and your humor tasteful. I can assume what that person said may have stung, but remember, that a LOT of people love your wicked art, including myself. ^^
