Odd question... what would be the best way to do birds... specifically arms and hands?
Normal arms with talons for hands and wings on the back?
Hands / talons with the actual wings extending off the wrists?
Cartoonish, where the flight feathers are the fingers?

That's a bird on bird basis, imo. The one I have uses the cartoonish variant, though wrist wings I feel is a bit more my style.

True... just trying to fish for ideas. Wrist wings seems the most 'practical' if you want to maintain looks with some appearance of function.

yeah my bird is also the cartoon feather fingers style. Most of the other birds I know go the gryphon route of talon hands and feet with wings sprouted off the back.

*nods* I'm leaning towards the cartoon one. Bird and Avian technically aren't the same thing.

For testing purposes, might I suggest sketching each on the same character, then asking which looks best?
