Something that puzzles me the most about the 'furry/therian/anthro/actually,i just really like animals' community
You* have so much love, compassion, understanding, and forgiveness for animals...but very little for each other
why is that?
You* all have very different interests and ethics that all in the end link you together for your basic passions.
I just get the feeling if we all spent less time arguing our innocence and non-participation in the more taboo and outright 'bad' acts of folks in the community and more time celebrating and promoting the positive and our more favoured side of it all, I think we'd be a damn site less vulnerable to all this self loathing and embarrassment.
Every subculture out there has a side its ashamed of (e.g. Goths and bondage, Ravers and date rape drugs, Indie and not being indie in the slightest - actually indie was annoyingly mainstream ing the early 00's, Rn'B and chavs etc.) but thats not the whole story! people wouldn't be in these groups if they didn't have mainly positive properties - the same is true of this one.
So, I'm going to make the promise, that whilst at university, if the 'furry/therian/anthro/actually,i just really like animals' subject appears in conversation, I shall not do as I have in the past, and speak soley of my digust in the sexual/unsavoury component of the fandom, but of what it is that I really love and enjoy about it; what it is that drew me to it in the first place.
Because trust me guys; I may not be a furry, but I am a fan of the 'dom' - if I really didn't like it I'd leave, since I have no reason to be here.
I read the dicussions and arguements on here and you know what? you people are so articulate, you are so patient, and you sum up the facts; a couple of times I have left myself vulnerable to attack on here by admitting my annoyance but lack of knowledge in a few subjects, and have instead been offered links and friendly reassurance. I really like you guys; you are good people; you are good artists.
Yeah, my grammar; I need to learn to it, I know.
but yeah, I did want to write you a journal about my seeing Avenue Q and District Nine on the weekend - and OH! I saw Zowie Bowie's new film Moon last night - excellent stuff! oh! and my mum is doing alot better now thankyou! and everything's great right now... but I just thought I'd write this journal tonight instead.
Peace,
Lou xxx

Tips
As we try to loudly defend ourselves (from not much of anything), we just make things worse without even realizing it (I mean, when someone asks what a Furry is and you give the oddly-specific denial "It's not about sex" right off the bat, that tends to get the questioner's mind going in that direction). Our intentions are all well and good, but that's not helpful. Whenever someone asks me about it, I just say we're a bunch of people who love talking animals, and see how things go from there.
That answer wasn't as coherent as I wanted it to be, but I'm trying to avoid the whole issue as it tends to give me a headache.
And District 9 and Moon are amazing movies 8)
But you're so right; I think folks need to stop feeling so guilty about their involvement in this fandom, and clear the air.
Not to say, there aren't areas of this subculture I don't agree with, but this isn't the only subculture that I'm a part of that has had bad press.
To sum it up (and not meaning to be too derogatory to men, as it's just a term of phrase)), Dicks are everywhere; they are a neccessary evil so that we can appreciate what's really good in life. And lets face it; without the aid of some dick, none of us would be alive, period.
