Art theft

Character Theft

User theft (Such as someone acting like you)

Are all VERY common in this fandom

Mostly its due to cheapskates who refuse to buy their own art and think "hey this character looks close enough to what I think MY character should be, so its mine now!" 

And I'm sorry, but thats not how it works

As far as I know from personal experience, and from watching others, each character someone makes is literally a piece of themselves and when our characters get stolen and or used in ways we do not consent to it literally hurts our souls

I have seen many "popular" characters be stolen to us for "RP" or cuz people are too lazy and think no one will notice

I have an acquaintance who has one of the #1 stolen characters out there. He's not big or popular but ONE person uploaded his character to pinterest or some other well known "art theft-haven" website and suddenly his character belongs to "everyone"

Art of the character was being commissioned without his consent that he was finding on other websites, including them changing his gender without consent

I recently found out about a popular artists whos character was commissioned WITHOUT consent mind you, to be in cub porn sand fetish art. Not only does this hurt the character, but this could come back to bite the artist in the ass as they do NOT support this crap and did NOT commission this art of  THEIR character being in LITERAL PEDO ART.

Its disgusting.

Its horrible

I hope both the freak that drew that art AND the one that commissioned it get thrown in jail cuz pedos need to rot in prison for their life with no freedom AT ALL

Back to the topic at hand

I know I have adopted a stance, that is even found in my own TOS where I will refuse to do art of the character unless I can trace it back to the original owner and or artist it was commissioned from. This is for my safety as well as the owner of the character

This includes with gift art to another, and I have and will go as far as to "destroy the surprise" ESPECIALLY if it is NSFW in nature to contact the other owner of the character to either verify they own the character (which if they have the character uploaded in their gallery then sometimes its a simple answer) or to verify that they know who is commissioning the art to me in the first place.

I have been literally THANKED for this and people have been SURPRISED

Why are people thanking me and being surprised???

Because not enough artists do this.

Not enough of us are going "Hold on, something doesnt seem right here, I need to double check a few things"

We NEED to be doing this

We NEED to be double checking 

Or more character theft into disgusting situations will happen and it will be our own fault for not checking ahead of time

We NEED to be vigilant about people and how they approach us and with what characters

Its not just, take my money now draw my character

Its an extra step

But I do it with EVERY commission I am commissioned

Now its YOUR turn, YOU check the characters, make sure they are owned by the owner

its pretty much the reason I don't put the art ive commissioned on my FA DA profiles as such so not many people can see it

I've been starting to do the same tbh
I primarily only put art of my characters on toyhouse nowadays
I have over 30 OC's and I think 5 are here on FA?
A few more are over on DA (since 11 of those are closed species characters and are part of groups and whatnot)
But I still worry...

I had over 75 but I sold loads and have scaled it down to 3-5, only people who have seen all my characters current stuff are friends and such and I get you its a scary thought in a sense its plain old identity theft.

Having my soma stolen is one of my biggest nightmares I may not have drawn her but I’m very grateful to the artist who did I waited years to get my own sona and thanks to my best friend I now have Rosalyn. He found the artist and made the commission. If I saw other people using my sona I would be devastated. I’ve over $1,000 into her to have more art of her. I don’t post her actual ref sheet to my account so people don’t think I stole it or made it because I did neither of those. I leave her ref sheet on the artists account so they can see for themselves who drew her and look at his art.

You and me both with the amount we've poured into our sona's... God I dont even know the amount I've poured into Ai, my PFP for reference, Or any other character I own, and I own over 30, and I try to give them each a lil bit of love (whether I draw the art or commission it) each year
I dont like having characters just sit there and not be used kind of deal
And same, I'm terrified of any of my babies being stolen, I have a character that may even be considered "childish" in a sense, due to what she represents, childhood lost, innocence forgotten, shes made in memory after I was abused kind of deal and shes 100% innocent and non-sexual and a sweetheart and playful. I love her to death
And if someone did cub porn of her, I would rip them limb from limb and then burn them to ashes
I dont tolerate that shit, and neither should anyone else
(She also has art in only 3 locations, toyhouse, art fight, and one piece on DA where I commissioned her human form)

I’ve adopted many sonas on here and I feel terrible because after I’ve started getting more art of my sona I’m not gonna use all the adopts that I got but I would still never try to claim the art as mine

100% agree with all of this. I used to belong to an RP server as a mod and I personally had to deal with this. The persons excuse was literally “it was on google so it’s fine.” I mean come on people, it’s really not hard to do a reverse image search. The image in question, I don’t know who owned the oc but I’ve definitely seen it on google and knew it wasn’t theirs. Guess what? I found out who owned them as well as the artist of the image in 5 minutes. They then had the stones to ask “can I use your oc” right to my face.

Art/character theft is sadly a big reason my uploads are lacking.
