Maybe a little soapboxy, but I'll try to be quick.
When you message someone as a stranger online, talk with purpose. This first message you send to them will set the stage, this will be their first impression of you.
If it's "hi" "rp?" or some other one word grunt, stop... think about it... are you presenting yourself as worth their time?
"Hi there OWO" "Whats up buddy" are equally pointless, cut the small talk and get to the point, I don't know how valuable your time is to you, but I value mine.
All the samples above? Nope, I dont answer them. You've shown me how little you care for our interaction so I'm not going to reciprocate it.
Instead of:
Subject: no subject
- rp?
Do this:
Subject: Roleplay?
- Hello! I'm curious if you roleplay, I didn't see any indications on your profile. I see you like X, Y and Z, I love X and Y, but am not familiar with Z. Would this interest you?
Treat it like a job interview. Be polite, professional and to the point. Do your research too! Take a minute to browse someones page (especially profile info) to see if they indicate a status on things such as commission, requests, roleplaying, etc.
TLDR;
When you message a stranger online do your research prior and get to the point in a prompt, but professional manner. You have only 1 first impression, make it count and be genuine~

I find that, especially in the german community, they most always reside to smalltalk. It's really frustrating.
Actually someone in a Discord server tried striking up conversation with me the other day. Now THEY came to me, but trying to get anything out of them was like trying to get blood out of a stone xP
"Looks good" and "Nice update" say enough if that's all you've got to say.
"You made a goof" or "I think I see a plot hole" aren't as helpful if you don't also point out what you saw (or thought you saw.)
So if your comment/statement suggests that you had more to say go ahead and say it (if you don't want to embarrass the writer/artist you can note them instead of commenting, but either way spell it out rather than making them have to ask what it was.)
If you check my FA stuff you'll find I have a couple of readers bound and determined to correct me blunders - and I welcome it.
Hope this helps and have fun!
Like some, they used to send me that kind of basic notes before. Although once, a practicing subject was "harassing" me by repeatedly sending me the same "hello" note for a few weeks because of a Fanart Mpreg of a video game character that I had done before.
I had to threaten the subject to block him if he continued to do more spam, and from that day two things happened: 1.- The subject stopped being interested in me and did not speak to me again (thank goodness), and 2.- I have not returned to draw Mpreg for trauma :I
