So you all know the 5 layers of the ocean. If not here is all the layers.
Sunlight Zone
Twilight Zone
Midnight Zone
Abyssal Zone (Abyss)
Hadal Zone (Trench)
Well I thought what if they're are subspecies of mermaids in the five layers. The lower you go the more the mermaids get deformed and monstrous.
I don't know why I thought of this. I was just looking at the layers and just thought of it.
