I have a friend who lives in Denver that went to a rally catching the occasional video and during one of them, the crowd she was apart of got hit with tear gas and rubber bullets. All they were doing was standing there chanting “no justice, no peace.”

This is decades upon decades of people losing their patience because of police abuses. It is tragic about George Floyd, I just don't see why this was allowed to happen to begin with. US Police don't even have a mandate to serve and protect the citizenry that they police. Its humiliating, frankly, to have this keep happening.

I dunno where you're from, but US police DO actually have a "mandate" to server and protect. They have to swear an oath, much like doctors, to uphold the constitution, and to server and protect their communities. A lot of them take it seriously, but theres always those that do not...

And sadly, the Minneapolis PD is notorious for being pretty bad... but there are a LOT of other more respectful police out there. Dont believe everything you hear or see on the news. The mainstream media typically ONLY reports the bad stuff, but there are a lot of peaceful protests going on right now in other cities and towns, with the local police even joining in and supporting the protestors.

There are police who respect the law, sure. But those who do not report those within their own departments are complicit as well. They need to be fired too. A good cop does not let bad cops get away with wrongdoing in their departments, the way our system is set up protects bad cops because of how the common law practice works. They're publicly paid, highly paid security guards the way the law works now.

The way I see is that there is a biased, dishonest system where police use their badge to justify brutality. The protests are motivated but the looting makes no justice as the police will be forced to use their power, whether good cop or bad... To believe that someone is paid to be unnecessarily brutal with even the innocent people. Clearly some of this police have higher motives... saw one guy push a woman so hard she fell metres away. “What if that was your mom”, I thought.

So I respect police that peacefully joins protestants. I respect citizens who clean up after they protest. I dont like the looting, the brutality and the manipulative media.

FYI that's not a good case to cite. Read the whole case, it should be interesting. Basically if the ruling was reversed it would mean I could use the police if my car was broken into because they did not prevent the crime. It also means people aren't automatically entitled to use police as bodyguards basically.

There is the letter of the law and the intent of the law. Police are not intended to be private security, they are intended to be the enforcement of laws, state and federal, within their jurisdiction, to not go over the line, and they have a responsibility to ensure that the town is safe to the most reasonable degree possible. The way you've phrased the interpretation you have is basing it on the letter of the law, while the intent is different in practice. This is why no law is absolute, because things happen in real life that makes a stringently worded law impossible to work within when say, it comes to business law, or some other aspect.

However, police should have a mandate to do anything and everything they can to ensure the security of civilians first, to carry out the protect in "Protect and Serve."

They should, which is why laws should be passed for those reasons.

My parents lived in Minneapolis, and they told me that the police there are some of the biggest hardasses they had ever met, and they lived in California and Florida too.

I saw this on twitter but there's this woman from Chile who's been doing sort of instructional videos teaching people how to stay safe during protests and the first things covered was tear gas and how to counteract it. Very neat stuff, very educational
