The nature of public platforms & standing by what you say
5 years ago
This is the journal header. Nothing to see here, get to reading the actual journal yah goof!
We live in an age where it's easier than ever to lock yourself into an echo chamber.
Countless online platforms make that easier than ever. But let's not beat around the bush here, Twitter epecially makes this easier than ever. With the ability for your Tweets only to be seen by whom you choose, allowing you to block keywords etc etc.
Basically allowing you to filter out anything you don't want to see. Which in most cases means, allowing you to block out opposing points of view, ergo, setting up your own little echo chamber.
So what am I getting at here?
I've always been of a mind that you should stand by what you say. If you state a point of view, opinion or whatever else on a public platform, where the general public can see it and more importantly, where it can come under scrutiny. You should be prepared to defend what you say. You should be prepared for public scrutiny, opposing points of view, and be prepared to discuss with the opposition in a calm and civilised manner. Who knows? You might learn something, and you might help enlighten someone of your side, where they may have been ignorant before.
If you're unprepared for those occurances: THEN YOU SHOULDN'T BE POSTING ON A PUBLIC PLATFORM
Because you are clearly incapable of handling public scrutiny. And if you can't handle public scrutiny, then don't post something somewhere the public can see it.
This is why nobody discusses anything anymore. Because nobody wants to talk. Everyone just wants to shout out their side, then stick their fingers in their ears and ignore what anyone else has to say. This is not how you engage in civil, adult discussion!
Stand by what you say. Be open to listen, especially to people from the other side. Don't be a fucking coward and hide in your echo chamber.
Peace.

If you state an opinion, I am allowed to state my opinion of your opinion. Both protected, both are fair. If you don't want to hear peoples opinions, don's give one. Thing is, everyone wants to proclaim their opinion, and don't want to have someone poke holes in it.
The thing that personally bugs me is the irrationality wherewith scrutiny is often either voiced, or received. If people just took an extra moment for either we'd probably be living in a different world.
And then there's the obvious element of obliviousness, people who do not wish to rationalize, let alone the narcissistic element of people who only WANT to hear what they preach, with taking offense as their only means of defense.
In the end: to each their own, I for one applaud opinions, if we'd all just relax a little in this troubled world and try and use our opinions to derive from it something positive at the end of the day.
But that's my humble two cents. Other than that I hope that whatever spouted this journal blew over. n_n
The hot water heater at my house had been leaking water for over a year, and this was in the middle of nowhere. (Note: I did not own this hot water heater that was leaking till 5 months ago.) I took out the old hot water heater, relocated it, and plumbed it up to the new spot. It ran for about 30 minutes, then the "High pressure/water relief valve" opened up, and let out about an eighth of a cup of water. I thought it was a bad valve, so I replaced it with a new one.
It leaked water out again, I decided to get a thermal expansion tank, and did a lot of work. One of the things recommended with a thermal expansion tank, which this was my first time installing one, is that you check the water pressure, and match the thermal expansion tank's air pressure to that. I learned the house had a water pressure of 90 PSI in the middle of no where.
All the headaches I had, and odds are what was wrong with the old hot water heater, was a simple pressure reducing valve.
Most will just claim "you are a troll / racist / homophibic etc etc (insert label)" if you express disagreement, towards someone who is heavily fueld with blind reassurance. (and like + shares)
We live at an age that disagreement = attack, criticism = hate , different perception = abnormal.
this is how ignorance spread and this is how closed minded and tunnel visioned mentality grows one day it will collapse.
It's scary how widespread this is. It seems everyone is constantly in fight or flight mode, and most of the time they go with fight. Everyone seems to be constantly at each other's fucking throats, ready to pounce and maul at the merest sign of opposition, no matter how civil that opposition tries to be.
It's sad. Nobody wants to listen, nobody wants to talk. it's all shout shout, maul maul....
What they are doing in social networking exactly the same mentality, sometimes even worse.
1) you are are in constant denial.
2) anyone who questions your thought, decision etc. = horrible person = "insert bad label"
3) anyone who thinks differently or has another view = (option number 2)
it's almost like you are not allowed to think against it and if you do you are "insert bad label".
very ironic, talk about "freedom of expression" and "Liberal" it's just as bad sometimes even worse.
Without a doubt, people should defend themselves in public spaces, I have a policy of freedom of speech does not mean freedom of consequence. Every action causes a reaction. You shouldn't expect people to agree with you or just keep quiet and tolerate you when you do something in a public space.
I certainly agree with taking social media platforms down a few pegs and wish certain people spent more time outside. I feel like a lack of worldly life experience is partly to blame for a lot of things, like maybe if everyone while growing up spent a year on a farm that we wouldn't be in the situations that we're in. There's so little empathy from so many people and the sheer fact that there's not even want to empathize presents a massive problem.
If more people could be voicing themselves like this, I think it would help. There's very little vocal unity from the more rational side of society and I greatly appreciate you making this post.
