The police are understaffed, constantly dropping demands to make up for the lack of recruits and after this, its going to get even worse. There are six people leaving the police department of NYC every single day. Where do you think all these magically talented, physically fit, compassionate and restrained recruits going to come from? Where is the money to train and attract them going to come from?

And I believe police brutality should be vigorously prosecuted, and all these bullshit "protections" that the police enjoy thanks to the police unions should be stripped.
But elimination of the police force is throwing the baby out with the bath water. I see no hope in normal crime or police brutality being checked in any way without some sort of "police" force, whatever you want to call it.

The status quo can no longer be tolerated, and the Police as they exist right now must be defunded and abolished. If you want to call what comes after "police", fine. But the system that exists right now must be destroyed.

As I mentioned elsewhere in this thread, I'm even fine with the abolition of police forces in general as long as we have a sufficient replacement capable of handling the situations we actually need police for. I don't want to go down the Republican road of Obamacare: "repeal now, replace with something better... eh, when we get around to it." I don't particularly care how much people hate the police, I just know that complete disbanding and leaving a power vacuum is the worst of all our choices.

We already had that -- in my city during the recent protests, there were caravans of cars and vans from out of town. They smashed store windows and grabbed anything of value. They got away with it because they could, because there was no one to stop them. The police were tied up with the large crowds. This has happened here pretty much every time there has been a giant event that keeps the police distracted.

So... replace it with the police? I think the police system could use reforming. I do not agree with the elimination of "police" entirely. Every single large society that has had a weak police force has had that power vacuum filled with something worse. Gangs, the Mafia, or just the environment of the good ol' Wild West.

There's some interesting stuff in there, but overall it reads more like a news report where some people advocate abolishing the police than something that provides a real solution.
It does mention the use of mental health professionals for engagement in cases with people with mental illness, something I've asked for for years. It was never fair either to the mentally ill or to the police to have them be front line mental help. That's not what they were for, but we don't believe in treating mental illness any other way in our country.

You ask questions that would need to be solved, and I am an intelligent enough person to know that I'm not an intelligent enough person to have all the answers, I just feel like it's pretty clear that the system as it exists isn't working, and "reform" has been tried in the past and doesn't seem to have worked. If the reform is dramatic enough to actually change things, fine, I just put up some suggestions instead of saying f the police and peacing out.

I do feel like we need to move forward with SOMETHING. I just don't want to go down the road the Republicans were with the ACA: "Repeal now, replace it with something better... but we don't know what that is, and we'll figure it out in the future."

I'm fine with major reforms of not just the police, but our concept of policing. But we will have to have a clear picture on what that is before abolishing the police or whatnot.

And maybe we need a better word than "reform," because yeah, we certainly need something more extreme than previous "reforms" that didn't really accomplish anything. Maybe "overhaul?" Even that sounds a bit too mild. We need change we can believe in. >_>

sorry, i don't agree with "Defund the police" cause it's term is idiotic. the issue is that it takes 6 FUCKING MONTHS to become a police officer and they're trained to shoot first now instead of de-esculation. They need to Reallocate the funds to Social skills and De-esculation Training. HOWEVER, i don't trust BLM due to their history of supporting some VERY bad eggs that usually ended up creating the situation where they got shot (gorge floyed, may he rest in peace, was not one of those thankfully and fully support that movement).
