this one's been around for a bit, but here's this ...

Basically - some people don't think to themselves.
Old quote: There are things that act and there are things that are acted upon.
Likewise, there are people who think, and there are people who let others do the thinking for them.
When you see someone who's blindly following others without questioning it for themselves ... it's highly likely they legitimately don't have an inner monologue ... ergo ... if they aren't acting for themselves are they an NPC?

Just invent a story in your mind. Like a movie, a funny cartoon, an adventure, a serie with ocs, or imaginary characters. Imagine the plot, the characters, the scenes, the situation, the problem the characters will encounter, etc...
I do that and I sleep asleep within 15-20 minutes. It never fail. It's so effective the next night, I resume the story where I was and continue to imagine the rest of the story.
I told one about how some people don't have inner monologues ... she was legitimately straining her brain to try and figure out how that could even be possible.
