Finally gave Streets of Rage 4 a try since my physical copy arrived today, and it definitely does a lot of things right, but one thing happened that blew my fucking mind. That moment when I was holding a weapon, moved to the next screen, and my character was still holding his weapon, I practically dropped my controller in utter disbelief.

Oooh, nifty: Was it the Limited run physical? I got the PS4 Classic edition after enjoying the Steam version for review, but that's held up until September due to Steelbooks. Sounds like it's a pretty cool release.

Yes it is, but I just got the standard edition instead of the Classic. I guess that finished sooner because of there being less production involved due to less content. I don't know how much you were able to see of the game during the review, but if you're a fan of beat'em ups then I can say you definitely won't be disappointed, and will surely appreciate a lot of the little things they did that are clearly in acknowledgment of people's main complaints when it comes to the genre, such as being able to restore health drained from using special attacks by pummeling enemies before you take damage yourself. Although I haven't played multiplayer yet, so don't know if you can hit each other, but that's something I've honestly never minded too much because it makes the game require more strategy and coordination between players.

Yeah I had a freaking blast with the game: proudly beat it and had a fun time unlocking characters (they're really cool, so I'll let you discover them). Definitely one of the highlights of 2020 for me.

You can definitely tell it was made by fans of the genre who learned how to make such a game through personal experiences, rather than just from developing them. Growing up and living through both the good and the bad, and applying that knowledge accordingly. However, as a masochist when it comes to difficulty, I just hope Mania mode ups the ante, because so far (up to I believe Stage 7) I've only ever needed one continue to get through a stage on Hardest while mostly using Floyd after having started with Axel, although I have beaten some stages without any.
