Specs on "The Four Cubs of the Apocalypse"
Greetings. I've never tried this before, but I'm going to do some commentary on the specifics of my inspirations and ideas that made up the four characters at https://www.furaffinity.net/view/36940512 illustrated by
kelvinthelion. The Four Horsemen of Apocalypse are biblical figures, but has been taken into science fiction like X-men among other places. Of course a number adaptations have put those biblical figures outside the Christian faith such as the animated series "The Hollow". My main inspiration came from Raven Software's "Hexen II". Even their true names have a likeness to the playable characters in the Hexen games. I wanted cub versions of the horsemen, which carried the respective curses and inflicted collateral rather than deliberate problems wherever they went. That way you'd feel sorry for those cubs and not judge them from the outside. I based their four colours on the basic ones Yellow, Green, Blue and Red, but much more dingy and darker to reflect their dark powers with glowing eyes matching those colours to reflect their immortality. I can't say exactly when they first emerged, but if I had to imagine, it would be some time in the first century AD.
Famine who was called Kamathadon came from North Africa in the fictional region Savakki (after the ecosystem savannah). Her name may not sound African but is Latinish like the Romans who ruled Mauritania (what we now call Morocco). I chose a hyena because, they are depicted as hungry and looking for food in "The Lion King". I chose a Striped-hyena instead of a spotted one because those species do more scavenging. I wanted Famine's origin to be a grain farmer because grain and water are the most important resources when it comes to feeding entire settlements. Her ochre colour scheme matches the colour of a barren desert, where food and water is scarce. Her weapon of choice is a knife, which is the tool a hungry traveler would use to cut bread or some other morsel, but her magic knife brings only hunger and rumbling tummies. Her ragged cloak reflects her worn out figure from traveling in the desert. It was difficult to find a fitting mask for hunger because one doesn't generally wear one when eating. I considered a Tusken raider mask, but it didn't quite fit the element of hunger. Finally I chose a face mask that patients wear when their face is badly scarred and need to be tube fed at mealtimes. The insignia on the diaper is that of an eating out symbol you find in most public places, but it reflects her desire for food.
Pestilence who was called Kerlekir came from Babylon, as many rats came from the Middle East. I chose a black rat, as they are stereotyped to carry the black plague, though as many rats died of it as mankind. Black rats are also typically more successful at travel than brown ones. I wanted Pestilence's origin to be a horticulturist as the perfect reason to inhabit the hanging gardens, and I filled in the fictional but fantastical reason for its destruction (which occurred around first century AD) because of Pestilence's power. His Feldgrau green colour scheme is very like that of a dank swamp, where malaria carrying mosquitoes like to breed. His weapon of choice is a mace because that is what your basic Healer wields, but his mace inserts a nasty case of common colds, sore throats, headaches and other non-lethal but contagious and unpleasant sicknesses. His wraparound cloak is similar to a patient's gown. His mask is a plague mask, which is ironic for one who spreads sicknesses, but it also holds back his foul smelling breath. The insignia on the diaper is a stink wave, which reflects the strong aroma he carries, which is pungent enough to sicken whoever catches a whiff. His smells are said to kill plants and flies as well.
War who was called Furrais came from Lupercal, where the legendary cave of the She-wolf was situated. I chose a wolf because they are talented at fighting and hunting. A grey wolf hides better in the shadows than a white one. As you would expect, his job was an actual hunter for gathering food, which takes skill. His blue colour scheme is reminiscent of some Ancient Greek soldiers with the fastened cloak and gladiator's helmet to go with it. His weapon of choice is a hand-and-a-halfer sword (also known as Bastard Sword), which is of course is early for its time since those kinds of swords first came in the late Middle Ages, making his sword a pretty over-sized one for the first century AD. Still his weapon goes well with his warring nature and shows everyone he's boss. His usage of the weapon does not slay, but inflicts anger and conflict. The insignia on the diaper is a trident which represents power and control and perhaps vanity in War's case.
Death who was called Burrloa came from Burh in Britannia (England nowadays). While Burh is not a place, it was a kind of place, a sort of Saxon fortification. While Saxons are known at the earliest around the first century AD, the Romans also had their own fortifications. I chose a badger because in some folklore they represent the element of death and are said to be the fiercest among mammals. Her job was a seamstress, work which must be done delicately as is the case with her new job in draining life. Her scarlet colour scheme is very much in line with blood and death. In many ways she resembles the grim reaper, particularly the half-skull mask, tattered cloak with a hood and her weapon of choice, the scythe. Death holds the scythe in one hand and uses it to put her victims in a long trance or a very long sleep. The skull insignia on her diaper has a laughing and grinning expression as if to mock her victims efforts in resistance.
I hope you enjoyed reading these descriptions about my four characters. I would really like to see them put in the Mythies comics some time in the future.
