artist needs help retrieving files from computer

All we are and all we seem...
her journal here explains the situation. basically, she had an oopsie and her files got wiped. her brother got her to buy a program to recover the lost files, but now she can't open any of them. but the files show file sizes and memory so they must have the art in them, right? she doesn't know what to do and has tried all the tricks she knows to no avail. she needs help to figure out how to retrieve her files.
