Well i live in Europe and more exactly the netherlands.
I have never experienced those power surges you have mentioned.
We have 220 volts and if i remember it correctly the US and Canada uses 110 volts.
If the power is being cut for maintenance we get a letter telling us why and when

Have you ever had a transformer breakdown?

Everything here is very old, wires, transformers and everything is constantly breaking down.

Sorry but no i have never experienced a broken transformer in 37 years.
I have seen those masts where the wires hang and they do not have transformers.

I live in the US. and my family lived in different homes. the latest house, it's old so yes, we lose power occasionally but not as frequently as you do. usually it's a good long storm or a strong one. freezing cold temp. (live in Michigan so it gets to -30 F. in winter) my old home was a bit newer and was renovated ALOT so we didn't lose power unless there was a serious problem. possibly it's from either A. lockdown. B. constant use from everyone around your town. or C. just the old home is breaking down slowly and needs some repairs.
