Question for the Upcoming Wrestling Tournament Project
5 years ago
Hey gamers, I got a question for y'all! So for people who don't know how this tournament works is that for each match for the tournament, the victor will be decided by group vote! So whoever gets the most vote will become the victor! However, I personally enjoy a factor of randomess when it comes to these things. Imagine an upset for someone who only received single digit votes to win, that's just epic! I'm curious about what's all of your opinions on this RNG factor? I'm thinking about rolling a 20 sided dice (yes a physical one cause i had/have a DnD phase lol) and adding what is rolled to the vote count of each fighter.
I know it's not really everyone's cup of tea so I just wanna gauge how you all feel about the victor being affected by the roll of the dice alongside the group vote?
EDIT: I got curious and went ahead and did some basic stat calculations. Not doing this to be like that guy who's trying to appear right by bringing in numbers. I just thought it was interesting so I just did it lol.
So for example, let's say I count the votes and it looks like:
Person A: 15 votes
Person B: 3 votes
Here is the probability of the B's wins if A rolls low:
A rolls 1, B rolls 14+: 5% * 35% = 1.75% B wins
A rolls 2, B rolls 15+: 5% * 30% = 1.50% B wins
A rolls 3, B rolls 16+: 5% * 25% = 1.25% B wins
A rolls 4, B rolls 17+: 5% * 20% = 1.00% B wins
A rolls 5, B rolls 18+: 5% * 15%= 0.75% B wins
A rolls 6, B rolls 19+: 5% * 10% = 0.50% B wins
A rolls 7, B rolls 20: 5% * 5% = 0.25% B wins
A rolls 8+: 0% B wins
With these votes, B has a 7% chance of winning and A has a 93% chance of demolishing B.
I then got curious and made the votes a bit more even.
A: 11 votes
B: 7 votes
A rolls 1, B rolls 6+: 3.75% B wins
A rolls 2, B rolls 7+: 3.50% B wins
A rolls 3, B rolls 8+: 3.25% B wins
A rolls 4, B rolls 9+: 3.00% B wins
A rolls 5, B rolls 10+: 2.75% B wins
A rolls 6, B rolls 11+: 2.50% B wins
A rolls 7, B rolls 12+: 2.25% B wins
A rolls 8, B rolls 13+: 2.00% B wins
A rolls 9, B rolls 14+: 1.75% B wins
A rolls 10, B rolls 15+: 1.50% B wins
A rolls 11, B rolls 16+: 1.25% B wins
A rolls 12, B rolls 17+: 1.00% B wins
A rolls 13, B rolls 18+: 0.75% B wins
A rolls 14, B rolls 19+: 0.50% B wins
A rolls 15, B rolls 20: 0.25% B wins
A rolls 16+: 0.00% B wins
Overall, B has a 30% chance of winning and A has a 70% chance of winning. 30% is respectful, but I can see how that can be somewhat... high.
And for the sake of it, let's just make it almost even with an odd amount of votes.
A: 10 votes
B: 9 votes
Not gonna bore you with more stats, so the overall chance of B winning is 47.5% and A has a 52.5%. A has a slight advantage but it's basically 50/50 at this point. While that seems unfair, keep in mind that it means my audience was basically split on the choice so half of my audience will always get what they want!!
Basically, I don't want people to be like... "All my faves are unpopular so they just get deleted ):" I want to give them a fighting chance. As long as the votes aren't unanimous, there will be people who don't get what they want. I just wanted to give a small sprinkle of hope with this lmao.

If you want to have an RNG element then you should, and the project will be better off for it because you'll be more interested in it.
....That's my five cents anyway.
With voting, there'll be very clear... favorites almost 100% of the time. Even when I did it with only 8 characters. It just kinda becomes a popularity contest and it just feels like... other characters get sidelined cause they're not "popular hot" since there's not too much plot going on. And while that's fine, I wanna make something a little bit more and I think RNG add a fun chaotic factor that would be a fun lil story for this silly project. Like... Imagine the most unpopular character getting to the finals by pure luck. And everyone who supported the characters who got eliminated by them vote for him and make them win lmao. I'm not expecting a huge thing like that but why not just have a little bit of fun to it.
I'll probably lessen the RNG factor as it gets closer to the finals because I can understand that'll be kinda lame since it's down to the wire. Hell, finals might just be a pure vote.
And ye, definitely agree that RNG does help make things slightly less predictable in a good way, so there is certainly a benefit there!
If each person whose character is part of the tourney is ok with winning or losing, then a set of five to nine dice rolls would allow a chance for a majority win either way.
Voting or RNG, never both.
because if one can be over done by the other; then it is setting in mind that one system just isn't worth participating with.
And it's not like there's a betting ring being set up where people bet money on who wins just to get screwed by RNG. At least, I'm not setting one up lmao. but like I think it also gives people who are rooting for the unpopular fighters a reason to vote. Work together and pray for that RNG. Just want to make cute lil experience idk lol. I personally think people who are deterred from voting by RNG affecting the results already don't really care who wins this dumb porn project lol.
heck you could have even suggested a Smash Avatar to be their champion and decides victory based off that xD
Another idea comes to mind: The voting amount determines the percentile to each character. so 12 to 8, then odds are in the voted character's favor but not set in stone.
Also Smash RNG would be pretty epic haha. Maybe for any side wrestling stuff I do, heh. More fun than a coin flip!
On my end though, I definitely am in favor of the random factor being added. It keeps things from being boring and having the expected winner be the one who wins all the time. It can be fun and is definitely more preferable on my end. Upsets are fun. Just as much as one sided fights.
I dunno, maybe I'm just a little too lax on the results? Like since the results are already completely out of my hands, whoever wins isn't a huge deal to me so my perspective is completely different to the audience's lmao.
And from a bit of experience with the former, yeah, RNG can really screw some match results up that others wanted. But I consider it rather interesting when it happens. It's always a lot of fun to see. Especially when that RNG is taken into account with the match flow. The character who won due solely to RNG getting a lucky win somehow despite losing the entire match, or the one who was going to lose getting even more screwed over by RNG. It's just fun to play with.
