I belive that animals are smarter than we think but that they, like every animal with a brain, need guidance to learn from others. That's how cats and dogs for example can learn to listen to commands (or like one viral video in which a cat can push buttoms to exclaim how they feel). They simple copying what the human has teached him and follow those examples because they trust them. It's an interesting article you sent me, something I didn't know about before and it does shows in a similar fashion that the horse has learned from its owner in a similar way as with cats and dogs.
